The Benefits of Dance Dance Revolution

Cassandra Molinar
Dance Dance Revolution has benefits that go far beyond just having fun. It is great for exercise, works vigorously on coordination between your eyes and feet, and it can provide great family fun! Allow me to explain.

In today's society, it has become normal for our youth, and us grown ups, to set themselves in front of the television and play their video games or watch their TV shows. True, DDR is a video game but with a delightful twist. It is a great form of exercise. It works you out to the bone. At first glance you see someone hopping around moving their feet around. But what's really going on is that they are getting a great cardiovascular workout. Working out your cardiovascular system makes your heart stronger therefore leading you down the path of a better and healthier future. So, instead of sitting in front of a TV, you are dancing in front of a TV. Sound familiar? That's right it's a lot like doing an aerobics workout. But don't tell the kids, they may lose interest.

Another benefit to playing Dance Dance Revolution is that it works on the coordination between your eyes and feet. Anyone who has actually tried playing DDR knows what I'm talking about. It looks easy but it's really not. For example: I was captain of my high school dance team but when I tried playing DDR, I was hit with the reality that I wasn't as well coordinated as I thought. Basically you see an arrow sequence on the screen and you have to dance that sequence exactly to get the best points. It's a lot harder than it sounds.

Don't think that Dance Dance Revolution is just for kids and teenagers. Adults can get in on the action too. That's why DDR makes for great family fun. You could schedule a night, or two, where the whole family comes together to have a fun tournament. The one with the best score at the end of the tournament wins a simple prize. It could be anything from getting out of doing a chore to winning an actual item. It could also be something as simple as getting your name posted on a wall in the house stating you are the Dance Dance Revolution champion of the house. Whatever it is, just have fun with it.

So there you have it. With the calories you will be burning, the coordination you will be strengthening, and the amount of fun you will be having with your family, I don't see why you shouldn't go out and try Dance Dance Revolution. Just remember to have fun!
