The Benefits of a Dramatic Play

Jamie Brown
Dramatic plays are theatrical productions that have been around for centuries. A play include several important elements, including actors, a set, script, and an audience. All elements play an important role in the production. Dramas can be comedies, tragedies, and romances. Though they are usually fictional in nature, there are some significant benefits to participating in plays.

History

The earliest dramatic plays date back to ancient Roman, Greek, and Medieval times. The very first official drama is dated back to 335 BC (Poetics by Aristotle). Shakespeare is considered to be one of the first high profile dramatic playwrights in history with his popular works, including Hamlet and Macbeth. If you've ever wondered what the two masks (black and white) mean on some printed play materials, it is the contract between the extremes of comedy and tragedy (the two main types of dramatical works).

Distraction

Dramatic plays are wonderful because they provide the audience with a major distraction from real life. For a short time you can get lost in the story of another set of people, who all have distinct personalities, feelings, motivations, and tribulations. You can easily become consumed with the sights and sounds associated with play.

Emotional Release

Another benefit of dramatic plays is the emotion that it provokes in viewers. Even though most plays are works of fiction, some can still ignite very authentic feelings in the audience. It is not a far fetched concept that a play could be based on a real experience. A well written and performed play will cause the audience to develop deep feelings for even the most villainous characters. Watching a play is a great way to release human emotion in a productive and satisfying way.

Social Issues

Many times, a dramatic play will reflect real life problems and social issues that people are plagued with on a regular basis. A play can shed light on a specific issue, such as racism (The Color Purple) or true love (such as in Shakespeare's dramatic plays). A well written and produced play can even solve problems in some very special cases. It is definitely a situation where art imitates life.

Musical Inspiration

Musical inspiration is a great benefit that comes with the production of a dramatic play. This is especially true if you look at Opera in the context of dramatic plays. The beauty behind Opera is in the music and singing from the actors. It conveys the feelings and struggles of the actors and inspires happiness, sadness, and excitement-sometimes all in one sitting.
