The Benefits of Drinking Red and White Wine with Your Meals

Wine and Your Health

N. Soltys
Wine has been consumed by humans through the centuries, and was just as popular hundreds of years ago as it is today. Wine is a bitter, tasty compilation of all the wonderful things grapes have to offer our bodies, and the processes it goes through to become wine can actually add some beneficial properties.

It goes without saying that no alcoholic beverage should ever be consumed to an unhealthy degree. A glass of wine a day, however, is actually very healthy for the human body and can have many health benefits that have been proven to be effective through the course of history.

All quality wine, especially red wines, are rich in phytochemical, which are the natural compounds from the grape plant that remain in the wine you drink. These compounds include flavanoids and resveratrol, which are powerful antioxidants that help to combat harmful microorganisms inside the body. These compounds have also been known to help prevent your arteries from clogging, and help regulate your good cholesterol levels.

Red wine has a high amount of polyphenols, another type of antioxidant. Drinking a glass or two of red wine with dinner is a great way to rid the body of any bad agents that you might get from eating, or just acquire throughout the day. While it is common knowledge that red wine is especially good for your heart, helping to prevent heart disease and lowering bad cholesterol, it's also notorious for helping your body fight off harmful infections, and has even been said to aid recovery after certain surgeries if consumed before and after meals.

The health benefits of white wine are not too significant, but as many people prefer white wine over red, it's important to stress it's good points! White wine still contains antioxidants (flavanoids and resveratrol), and that means it's good for your heart, your circulatory system, and has been said to even aid in digestion. Another property of white wine that's still being researched, is it's positive effect on your lung health! Many varieties of white wine, and white wine only, have been recorded recently to help lessen the effects of aging on your lungs, and keep them in tip top shape. Vitamin C and magnesium are found in abundance in white wine, because of the certain varieties of white grapes used to make it. Those two agents working together have been proven to work wonders on your lungs, and make for one more reason to enjoy that glass of white wine with dinner.

Wine is, and always has been, a vital part of a fantastic dinner. It's important to keep your heart and lungs healthy, and to keep a close eye on your cholesterol intake and any infections you might have. That being said, it's always best to drink in moderation, and remember that too much of a good thing can always be bad!
