The Benefits of Folic Acid (Folate) to Heal Cervical Dysplasia
Holistic Medicine - Folate or Folic Acid for CIN or Cervical Dysplasia
After an abnormal PAP smear and cervical biopsy (a not so pleasant experience) in 2008, I was diagnosed with low grade (benign) cervical intraepithelial neoplasia or CIN. My OB doctor recommended cryotherapy for the areas of my cervix with CIN. Being anti-procedure, I did some research and discovered the wonders of folic acid or folate. I declined the in-office procedure and requested a folic acid supplement and increased my intake of folate rich foods. IMO, conventional doctors, are pro-procedure. They don't tell you about natural alternatives and generally aren't very informative (beyond covering their own butts) unless you ask the right questions. Nowadays, it is up to the patient to research alternatives.
Folate is a vitamin found naturally in many foods. Folate helps your body make new cells. Folic acid is the man-made form of folate. It can be taken in vitamin pills. It is also added to many grain products, including cereals, breads, and flours. Green, leafy vegetables: spinach, asparagus, lettuce; beans ( including garbanzo) and peas, fortified cereals, sunflowers seed and other fruits and vegetables are rich sources of folate. Hazelnuts contain the highest concentration of folate, which reduces risk factors for cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's, neural tube defects, and depression. Folic acid also increases effectiveness of antidepressants. Certain medicines, alcohol and tobacco reduce folic acid levels in your body. A folic acid supplement may be helpful if you drink alcohol .
The benefits of folate or folic acid are astounding. I feel re-energized after taking a folic acid supplement and thankfully, my last 2 PAPs were normal! I tell everyone I know about the various benefits of folic acid and the renewed energy I experience after taking a supplement. I hope you will follow my links and take charge of your health. Talk to your doctor of osteopathic medicine, your PCP or OB doctor about a folic acid supplement or fortify your diet with folate.
