The Benefits of Having a Lawn

How Going Green Can Help Your Life

Bobbi Leder
Everyone is talking about going green nowadays but did you know that your green grass can actually help you? You might not think of your lawn as being an asset in your life, but it is. Of course having a lawn is also a chore and a big responsibility but there are more advantages than disadvantages. So the next time you're sweating while the sun is beaming down on you on a Saturday morning, remember that your lawn is benefitting your life.

Exercise

Getting off of the couch and pushing a mower around might not seem like a physical challenge but mowing your lawn can burn more calories than playing volleyball or Frisbee. You'll be using your muscles and getting a cardiovascular workout all at the same time; and mowing your lawn will work both your upper and lower body.

Fresh Air and Sun

There's nothing like getting a bit of fresh air and sunshine on a beautiful day. A small amount of sunshine is actually good for you. The sun stimulates your skin to produce Vitamin D - which is necessary for your body to absorb calcium, and it can help prevent cancer and heart disease. And sunlight is known for having a positive effect on your mental health.

The air outside is fresher than the air you breath inside since there is no dust, so take advantage of being outdoors and take time to smell the roses while admiring your lawn.

Socializing

Having a nice green lawn provides a plethora of opportunities for you to enjoy the outdoors with your friends, family and co-workers. You can have a picnic on a blanket, cook up a BBQ, play ball, and even have an outdoor party. People tend to be more casual and have more fun when they're outdoors so get your grill fired up and get those hamburgers cooking.

Gardening

Imagine being able to walk out into your backyard and pick your own tomatoes, strawberries or cucumbers? It's all possible if you have a nice little garden in one section of your lawn. And if fruits, vegetables and herbs are not your thing why not plant a few fragrant flowers? Your nose will thank you if you plant enticing scents like lavender, rose, or and gardenia.

If you want to be able to walk amongst butterflies, why not plant food sources for caterpillars (which will metamorphose and turn into beautiful butterflies) like the copper canyon daisy or the fall aster?

Your lawn will provide you with a wealth of benefits so remember to take care of it with water, weed killer, and fertilizer.
