When you first start homeschooling, you instantly realize that their is an abundance of curriculum that you have to choose from. If you scour the web you will see that there are really plenty of choices available to help with educating your children. There is a large variety of learning styles and techniques to choose from. In my experience I have learned that having a back up to any curriculum choice is a must.
There are many benefits to having a back up curriculum, even if you think you have the perfect fit. As kids grow, what may have worked for the first few months of the year, may not work toward the end of the school year, and you may suddenly find yourself stuck. One of the luxuries of home schooling is that you can switch curriculum's when you need to, although this can vary depending on your state rules. Of course that is really not the major reason for choosing a back up curriculum. Sometimes after you have made your choice of choosing a curriculum you may suddenly find that they are out of stock on the workbooks you may desperately need. Lets face it if you don't order early; in some cases the popular curriculum choices may be back ordered. You may not think this can happen often, but let me tell you that it really does, and usually when you least expect it.
In many cases you have to first try out the curriculum to see if it will work for your children. If you find that your first choice does not work out to be a good fit, than you may need to go with your second option. If you are worried about the loss of money, when your curriculum choice does not work out, keep in mind that you can always sell it. Remember that there are many parents who are on the same homeschooling journey as you, who would be willing to buy used curriculum from another homeschooler. What does not work for one person, may in fact work for another.
So the bottom line is not that you have to order both curriculum's, but it is a good idea to keep your list handy with your top two choices. If your first choice does not work out this does not mean that you have failed with your homeschool journey. It simply means that you have to try something different to fit your child's learning style. The key is to focus on your child's learning style first, then when making curriculum choices you may find the task to be a lot easier.
