The Benefits and Importance of Flossing

Tiffany Bell
Most people know that it is recommended that you floss your teeth every day but truthfully how many people really do it? If you don't floss your teeth every day or even every week you are underestimating the importance of flossing, which can be detrimental to your oral health as well as your overall health.

Here are just some of the benefits of flossing.

The number one importance of flossing has to be the prevention of gum disease. Flossing removes food particles, bacteria, and plague that are stuck in between your teeth or gum lines. When these items stay in your mouth for too long they can actually start to wear away your gums and cause an infection. Infections and receding gums lead to gum or periodontal disease, which is a serious problem. Prevent gum disease by flossing every day and removing the harmful particles from your mouth.

One of the immediate benefits of flossing actually has to do with your appearance rather than a health issue. No one likes walking around with food or plaque in their teeth. By simply taking a few minutes to check out your teeth and give them a quick flossing you can make sure that you are not embarrassed when you go to talk to someone and you have a piece of spinach in your teeth.

Flossing can also help to prevent bad breath. When you have tiny food particles or bacteria that are stuck in between your teeth and gum lines, it can actually make your breath smell quite bad. Taking mouthwash will not get rid of all the food or bacteria and you should be sure that you floss as well.

If you are pregnant or planning on getting pregnant then you should make sure that you start a daily flossing regiment. Periodontal disease, which can be prevented with regular flossing, can actually cause premature birth. There are many different medical complications that can come along with premature birth so it is best that you try to prevent it at all cost.

Another importance of flossing that many people don't realize is that regular flossing and good dental hygiene can actually lessen the chance of cardiovascular disease. Harmful bacteria that enter the body via the mouth can actually work its way into the bloodstream and cause clogged arteries or heart problems. Prevent these types of cardiovascular disease by brushing and flossing your teeth every day to remove the harmful bacteria so it can never enter your body.

Flossing is not hard to do, but it does take time. If you are one of the many people who don't floss on a regular basis, hopefully this article showed the many benefits of flossing and it has changed your mind about flossing.
