The Benefits of Mullein

Food & Herbs Give More Than Flavor; They’re Medicinal

Josephine Sheppard, MA, PhD, NHC

Not all herbs are commonly recognized in your food pantry or ready purchased at your local grocery store, unless you habitually shop at specialized markets and organic local farmers fair, or even grow your own vegetable, herb and medicinal garden.

However, an opportunity to implement what is available, possibly at you own curb side or at least nearby, having a tendency to grow on hedge-banks, by the road sides, on waste ground, and even more especially on gravel, sand or chalk - is a leafy, green, with small yellow growing upright, stalked plant, called, Mullein. It is known to flower during July and August.

The plants can grow to nearly 4 feet or so, remaining larger at the base of the plant and the leaves as large as particle arm length and hand width. The leaves tend to be a deep green with a little fuzz on them. These are more mature plants. The younger plants, naturally are smaller and also do not have the center flowering stalk either, just leaves, which are smaller and thinner in texture.

The flowers and leaves are the primary medicinal parts. The seeds are considered toxic, so stay away from them.

Primary general medicinal uses for Mullein has been using leaves as a tea for complaints for colds, asthma and coughs, as well as bowel complaints, including bleeding bowels to remove the pain and irritation of hemorrhoids. Poultices have also been created for hemorrhoids.

Mullein is also implemented for the relief of diarrhea, as well, due to its astringent properties and combination bowel strengthening properties. Mullein oil, created from extra virgin olive oil and the flowers, soaked in sunlight steeped for 21 days, is known to bring relief to eczema, ear aches, and destroys disease and germs because it eliminates bacteria.

Mullein is beneficial in eliminating headaches and migraines, as a tincture formulated out of an alcohol or non-alcohol base for a 10 drop homeopathic dose, with cold water.

Mullein tea, sweetened with honey and combined with the herb bee balm leaves may be taken as a preventative and calmative daily, recommended 1-2 cups for general health and decreasing anxiousness, stress and improving antioxidants to boost immune system.

The next time you may consider reaching for your medicine cabinet, consider looking in your own back yard for the ideal, cost effective remedy.
