The Benefits of Nature and Camping

Fiona Johnson
Almost everyone can recall a favorite camping trip or outdoor moment from their childhood; but did you really know the effects it had on you? In today's busy world, few people find time to commune with nature and reap the rewards. With the luxuries that have worked their ways into our lives it is no wonder people are not at home in the great outdoors, without their cell phones, televisions, computers, etc. Hopefully after you are through reading this article you will have some insight or reminders of what you can receive for paying nature a visit every once in a while.

Camping is not only a way to identify with the past of our ancestors but to prepare for the future. Stress levels can significantly decrease in nature, without all the worries and complications of everyday life; it allows you to clear your mind and look at your current situations from another perspective. Or maybe you don't want to think while outdoors, with a clear mind and a cleansed spirit you can tackle those situations when you return, knowing you are renewed and can give it your all.

There can be numerous advantages of camping for children. Camping can help children learn to be aware of their surroundings and what is taking place around them. It can teach them basic survival skills, enabling them to better handle a problem if one should arise. Camping can help children understand nature and the earth, its importance, and how to take care of it. Camping gives children something to connect to and tasks that even small children can perform, increasing their self-esteem.

The benefits don't diminish with age either. Camping can have profound effects on adolescents. It can help prepare them for adulthood by teaching them life skills and how to take care of themselves. Camping can be a wonderful bonding moment, allowing them to speak more freely of their feelings and concerns that they would otherwise not feel comfortable talking about. It makes them realize that the world is bigger than some of the menial aspects of life, thus making things like peer pressure or a bad grade seem less daunting. Camping also informs them about nature, they can better understand its force and although it might not ultimately seem fair, it is all the "circle of life."

Other nature outings such as hiking and fishing can have tremendous rewards too. Hiking is not only great exercise but a great way to blow off steam and clear your head. You can learn a lot about the woods, animals, and even yourself while hiking. While fishing tends to not be as good of an exercise as hiking, it definitely has undeniable benefits, especially for children. Fishing can help adults unwind and tune into the simplicity of nature. Children can learn the ultimate form of patience and determination while fishing.

Many people are concerned with the safety of camping and the outdoors in general. Proper preparation and precautions are indeed needed. There are numerous organizations that inform and teach people how to be safe while camping, hiking, fishing, and other outdoor activities. If you're new to the wilderness, this would be a great option to learn and teach your children how to have fun and feel competent with your abilities to keep them and yourself as safe as possible.

Others don't like the unpredictability of nature. Maybe during your whole trip it rains, the temperature isn't what you expected, or you have to pitch your tent six times before it stays up. Relax and enjoy everything that comes your way, the good and the bad. Nature is all about taking things as they come and ultimately feeling whole, empowered, and free. Nature knows no discrimination or stereotypes, so embrace it, enfold in the beauty, and the unpredictability. This is what nature truly is.
