When going on backpacking trips, generally speaking, there are two types of equipment you will pack: Necessities and non-essentials. One thing about backpacking is you have to learn to eliminate the majority of non-essential equipment. In fact, this is often the mistake most beginning backpackers make. They want to take everything, and they do. However, a few miles into the journey, they'll soon realize that next time they'll be a little more selective. When it comes to non-essential items there is one item that you should bring with you, backpacking pillows.

Why You Should Pack Backpacking Pillows

You can pack regular pillows; however, regular pillows pale in comparison to backpacking pillows. Backpacking pillows are over sized and stuffed very full. Backpacking pillows are made this way, because it provides so much more comfort when lying on the cold, hard, ground, than regular pillows could ever provide.

Just because they are over sized and stuffed fuller doesn't mean they don't pack well. In fact, backpacking pillows are made to be squeezed into a backpacking bag. There are some manufacturers who make backpacking pillows which fold into a smaller shape, for easier carrying. One factor you have to consider when packing a non-essential item is how much more extra weight it will add to your load. Backpacking pillows are extremely light weight, so that's not even much of a consideration.

If by reading this article, you've decided buying a backpacking pillow is a good investment; you can go to your local outdoors store. Your local outdoors store should have a wide selection at good prices available to you. You may even be able to find them at your local Wal-Mart if they have a camping section. If you don't have an outdoors store or your local Wal-Mart doesn't carry them, don't worry you're not doomed to sleeping on hard, cold, ground yet.

You can also find backpacking pillows on the internet. It won't take you long to find them for sale when you look on the internet. The best part about shopping for backpacking pillows online is you can really do a lot of price comparisons.

When it comes to non-essential items to pack for a backpacking trip, you just can't beat having a backpacking pillow with you. You'll actually be able to enjoy staring up at the stars, instead of being distracted by neck cramps.
