The Benefits of Practicing Pilates

A.Bruni
Pilates is a system of exercise that allows you to take control of your mind and body. A German native called Joseph H. Pilates developed it. He suffered from rickets and other illnesses as a child and grew up determined to strengthen his weak body. He founded this system of exercising that is also referred to as a 'yoga-like system that uses machines'. However, the exercises are quite different from yoga. It uses smooth, flowing movements that tone and stretch your body and increase strength and flexibility in your muscles and joints. It also utilizes the power of mind to help with the exercises and to increase the harmony between body and mind. Harnessing the power of the mind is an important component in all the Pilates exercises and brings great benefits.

The Pilates system offers a complete workout for the body that exercises not just the main muscle groups, but weaker, less-used muscles too. It therefore enables you to achieve a perfectly toned body and realize your true fitness potential. It is also an exercise system that is open to all, because anyone of any age can do Pilates. Doing Pilates regularly can offer the following advantages:

1. Improved Body Balance: The exercises give you a greater understanding of your body and muscular systems. You will become more aware of the symmetry of your body and how every movement has its own balances and checks.

2. Lessens Stress: Pilates enables you to relax, and to work off the chemical effects of stress, such as excess adrenaline in the body.

3. More Efficient Digestion: Pilates can help to tone and strengthen the muscles of stomach. Since it also helps to reduce stress, this will help to ease the digestive process, which shuts down during the times of severe stress and tension.

4. Increased Oxygen Intake: This helps the body's systems to function efficiently, resulting in clearer thinking, greater energy levels, and muscular health.

5. Better Circulation: Pilates helps to improve blood flow, which means more efficient circulation of nutrients and oxygen, and easier removal of toxins.

6. Improved Skin: Improved cardiovascular function means more efficient removal of waste products and a clearer skin.

7. Enhanced Immune System: Pilates exercises the muscles, which helps lymph to circulate around the body. Lymph carries white blood cells, which fight disease.

8. More Sculpted Body: The exercises help you achieve a longer, leaner look.

9. Greater Strength and Coordination: As you practice, your coordination, strength and balance will increase. You will move with greater ease and grace.
