The Benefits of Preschool for a Child with ASD

Children with Autism Benefit from Preschool

Laurie Childree
Preschools especially those that are government funded as part of the public school system are seen by some as nothing more than a free daycare but this could not be further from the truth. Autistic children can benefit from being placed in either a typical or disabled preschool setting. Children usually learn without parents or others around them noticing as it is a natural process but that is not the case with an Autistic child.

Socialization
Autistic children have difficulty with socialization and often lack play skills that develop naturally in other children. Children on the spectrum will often have trouble making eye contact, communicating, focus on a single aspect of a toy or simply organize toys and other objects instead of using them appropriately. Placing these children in a setting with other children their age whether disabled or not allows them the opportunity to interact with others.

While individual teaching is very important to children on the spectrum they also have to learn how to utilize skills in a group setting. It can be difficult for small children to be comfortable in a strange situation and Autistic children need time to learn about these situations. Placing children with social difficulties in small group settings to learn with children their own age can ease the pressures on them making learning easier for them.

Play Skills
Children with an Autism Spectrum disorder often lack play skills. Instead of playing with the entire toy they often focus on a single aspect of the toy. A setting with other children that are engaging in imaginary play can help to increase play skills.

School Readiness
Autistic children in preschools can be better prepared for Kindergarten. While they may not leave preschool with all the knowledge they will need to take them to college they will be used to a school setting and the structured routine by the time they begin school with everyone else. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders often thrive off of routines. The school setting can give them a sense of security. A special education preschool can also help parents to get adjusted to IEP meetings and setting goals for them that are realistic and measurable.

Both day care and preschool can be scary ideas for parents especially when your child has issues but getting past those fears can do your child a world of good. The benefits of preschool for Autistic children can not be underestimated. The environment should be one that your child can feel safe in which will help them to learn. The social setting can help them get past some issues they have with other people while helping them develop basic skills they will need later in life at an early age.
