Practicing Qigong involves breathing deeply and mentally focusing on various parts of the body. This process works to strengthen, benefit, and energize the blood and vital organs. Qigong exercises provide oxygen to tissues and opens the pathways that carry energy and increases blood flow throughout the body. It also balances what is known as yin and yang, the contraction and expansion of energy throughout the body. One of the easiest exercises involved in Qigong is to sit in a relax position, usually Indian style, with a direct posture. Closing the eyes, concentrating on your abdomen, and breathing deeply through the nose allows a healing energy to flow through the body. Some parts of the exercise involve moving the arms, while other exercises involve sitting still. This type of Qigong exercise is very beneficial to the body's vitality and overall condition.
The arm exercise stimulates and opens up the flow of energy to the lungs, large and small intestines, and the heart. This helps increase and balance energy, promoting vitality in these organs. Qigong is easy to learn and can be learned by an instructor or watching the exercises on television. One of the best ways to know if a teacher is qualified is if they seem balanced, calm, and full of energy. If they aren't, then you probably need to go elsewhere. Qigong is specifically for therapeutic benefits. Certain types of Qigong exercises are used to affect certain parts of the body like the digestive, respiratory, and reproductive systems. Other Qigong exercises are done to provide an overall positive influence and benefit to the entire body.
Qigong is generally safe. However, if you are pregnant or have certain medical conditions be sure to talk with your doctor to see which kind of Qigong exercise you can engage in. Qigong may include certain types of yoga, energy healing, relaxation and breath therapy, but it can be done alone as an alternative treatment and therapy to help cultivate and increase the vitality of the body.
