The Benefits of a Soundproof Wall

Bennie Perry
All of us have had those times where we needed to shut out the rest of the world. Screaming kids, or the noise from the boom box coming from the room of your teenager across the hall may have surrounded us. Maybe you just needed to be able to hold a coherent conversation with your spouse or significant other. But the reality of the matter is that most homes were not constructed with sound proofing in mind. What can you do about this problem?

A sound proof wall may be just the thing for you to be able to get away from the noise and commotion every now and then. They can be used in your bedroom, home office, or family room. Keep in mind the fact that you will need to choose a room or rooms that will benefit the most from having the soundproof walls installed. This can make the difference between a family that is able to get a good nights sleep, or one that arrives at the breakfast table in the morning ready to take on the day. Soundproof walls can be used in just about any room in the house.

A soundproof wall in your house will also give you an added feeling of security when you and your spouse want to have a few minutes of privacy for an intimate moment, as well a preventing you from having to yell out across the house to tell your teenager to cut the music down. They'll be much more likely to stay home where they are safe if they know that they have a little more leeway to be able to stay at home and do some of the things that they enjoy, without worrying if they are going to be yelled at.

If you work from home, having a soundproof wall in your home office will make it much easier for you to stay focused, in spite of the distractions of active kids, a barking dog, or a noisy vacuum cleaner. If your business requires that your clients visit you in your office, a soundproof wall will keep your interactions with those clients private. It may also leave your clients with the impression that your home life is a little more together than it really is.

A soundproof wall will give you the benefit of being able to work without being interrupted, while allowing you to focus on numbers or writing correspondence. If having a soundproof wall will make you more productive overall, it may actually pay for itself in no time at all.

When it comes to having your soundproof wall installation done, you will have many different options to consider. You need not break the bank to get this task accomplished either. If you are a do it yourself kind of person, it could be as simple as gluing some cork cushioning to the back of a sheet of 1/2" drywall, and then attaching it to your existing wall. It is recommended that you use glue instead of nails or screws, because nails or screws will transmit sound vibrations. You can gain a wealth of ideas and tips about soundproof walls by taking the time to talk to a building contractor or you local homebuilder's association.
