The Benefits of Strength Training for Women

Jenny Blake
Strength training is not just for body builders and triathletes. Many women are sometimes scared away from this type of exercise because they don't want to look all "bulked up," but in fact, strength training should play a part in every woman's fitness routine. Following a basic routine with weights will not produce oversized bulky muscles, but instead will give you a firm, sleek look and help build lean body mass.

The benefits of strength training are not limited to just having a toned, fit body. Strength training has been shown to boost endurance and stability, especially important as women age. A strong body can handle stress and injury much better and the healing process is less traumatic. Using weights in a fitness routine accomplishes this by strengthening not only the muscle but the ligaments, tendons and bones as well. Strength training also helps us prevent disease by increasing all over general health and boosting the immune system. Doctors are recommending strength training for recovering cancer patients, and it's also major part of physical therapy after an injury.

Many women think of aerobic exercise as the best fitness routine for heart health. However, strength training will improve cardiac function as well, and will help keep the good cholesterol, HDL, at the proper elevated levels. Increased joint mobility and an increased metabolism are additional benefits of adding weights to a fitness routine.

For the best possible results, set aside at least two and a half hours a week for moderate physical activity. At least half of that time should include weight training which gives a more complete workout. A great way to find a routine you like and stick to it is to hire a personal trainer, even if it's just to get started. It's important to practice proper form when strength training. Proper form will prevent injuries and ensure each muscle is getting the proper workout, and a trainer will ensure the exercises are performed properly. A trainer will also help you set goals, provide nutritional advice and motivation.

Staying motivated with any fitness routine is difficult, and strength training's repetitive nature can sometimes get boring. Remember to mix up the rest of your workouts by biking, hiking or swimming. Reward yourself for reaching your goals, and don't beat yourself up if your unable to work out or just don't feel like it. Lastly, make strength training fun by doing it as part of a class or group of friends. Having group support is a great way to reach your fitness goals.
