Instead of buying hand towels why not take what you have in the house already and put them to good use. I like to take old bath towels, and turn them into kitchen towels. There are lot's of benefit to using kitchen towels, especially if you are considering going with more of a green lifestyle. You can never have enough hand towels in your kitchen, and that is why this method comes in handy.
The best time to do this is when your bath towels get ripped and torn, or they start to become discolored. You can cut the bath towels down to the size of your regular hand towels. What is nice about doing this is that you can adjust the size of the hand towel to fit whatever you like. They can be as big, or as small as you like. I would recommend however, keeping them to regular hand size, this way they will be able to fit into one drawer. In order to be able to distinguish between my bathroom hand towels and the kitchen ones I like to bleach all the towels that I make myself. When I put the cut and resized bath towels down, I put them in the washing machine. After the first cycle has finished I add about two capfuls of bleach if I have a full load. A smaller load will not need as much bleach. When they are done washing, you can dry them, roll them up, and place them in a drawer in the kitchen. I really like to have just one drawer in the kitchen dedicated to these hand towels. This way I will always have one when I need them.
It is also a good replacement for paper towels in the kitchen. If you have enough of these hand towels to go around you can give these out whenever you, and your family are eating. Then just toss them in the laundry pile until you have enough for a full load. I keep one roll of paper towels in a closet just in case I have gone through the hand towels. The hand towels are also perfect for cleaning up messes that happen around the house. There are really so many things that you can use them for that it only makes sense to make your own, and keep your kitchen fully stocked. So before you throw out another bunch of towels, see if you can use them for another repurpose around the house. It's really all about reusing and recycling.
