The Benefits and Uses of Flax Seeds

Flax seeds are a wonderful and, in my opinion, underused ingredient. Although I've been interested in nutrition for a while, it was only recently that I learned about all the benefits flax seeds and flax oil have to offer and incorporated them into my diet.

You can either use flax seeds or flax oil, depending on what health benefits you are seeking. Flax oil is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which has been shown to, among many other things, reduce cholesterol. Flax oil is great for vegetarians as an alternative to fish oil.

Flax seeds contain flax oil, but also have other benefits. When ground, flax seeds can add a lot of fiber to your diet and clean out your digestive system. They also have a decent amount of protein. The seeds should be ground before consumption. Freshly ground seeds are better than pre-ground ones, so if possible, grind them on your own. I like to use a coffee grinder, but a food processor works too.

When mixed with water, ground flax seeds can be used as a substitute for eggs in baking. One tablespoon of flax mixed with three tablespoons of water is approximately equal to one egg.

There are many ways to eat flax. Flax seeds have a great nutty flavor, and can be mixed with a large variety of food. Flax oil is available in a variety of flavors and can be mixed with food. Ground flax can be sprinkled on yogurt or oatmeal in the morning, or mixed in with your pasta sauce later in the day.

One of my favorite ways to eat flax is to make a healthy fruit smoothie. I place a tablespoon of freshly ground flax, a tablespoon of flaxseed oil, one banana, one cup of yogurt, three ice cubes and handful of blueberries in blender. It is a delicious, healthy breakfast or a great drink for after a heavy workout.

Flax seeds and flax oil are available in most health food stores and can be ordered online. Flax oil needs to stay refrigerated so that it doesn't turn rancid. Make sure to introduce flax seeds slowly into your diet so that it doesn't cause diarrhea. Always have water when you eat flax seeds so that it doesn't cause intestinal blockage.

Flax can be a great supplement to your diet. If you are unsure about whether to add flax to your diet, consult a physician or nutritionist.
