Volunteering is a great way to socialize. People of all ages and backgrounds lend a hand and volunteer so as a volunteer you will be exposed to different kinds of people. You will interact with these people on a daily basis and may even form lifetime friendships. You also get to interact with those whom you are servicing.
Volunteering will broaden your personality. Often times the ones that you are servicing when you volunteer will be in positions where they are less fortunate. Some of those individuals that need help may be in a hospital setting, nursing home setting or a shelter. Your life might contrast greatly to their life which will give you incite into a reality completely different from yours. Seeing this contrast might cause you to gain a greater appreciation of your life and those in it. You may also gain empathy for those less fortunate than you.
Volunteering will humble you. Again, you may volunteer at places where the individuals are not in the happiest state of their lives. If you are a person that goes through life with little concern of others, volunteering will definitely humble you and make you stop and think about your own life and those around you. You might get the chance to volunteer at a children's cancer ward, a facility where abused women and their children seek refuge, or at a nursing home where the elderly have no family to visit or care for them.
Volunteering is a great way to gain experience whether you need experience for work or school. You can volunteer at the place of your choice and apply it to your work history or as an extracurricular activity when applying to college. Having volunteer history puts you at a step above those who are applying for a similar position or applying for admission into a selective college. If you have been out of work for a period of time then volunteering can give you the needed experience to make you a better candidate for the position you wish to apply to. Employers are more prone to hiring individuals who have had significant volunteer experience as opposed to individuals who have been out of work for two or three years.
Volunteering is a great way to gain professional references. References are always great to have. We need references when applying for jobs, loans, apartments etc.. It is always great to have 2-3 people that can give you great professional references. When you volunteer and do a decent job you may be able to ask your supervisor if you can use his/her name for future reference. You can also ask the supervisor to type you a letter of recommendation or reference. You can take this letter and photocopy it and keep it in a file for later use and attach it to your resume when applying for a job.
Volunteering looks excellent on a resume. It not only gives you work experience but it shows that you are a compassionate and reliable person. Since volunteering does not pay it shows that you are a motivated person who will get the job done even if not paid. This will speak volumes to future employers.
Volunteering will keep you busy. Some older people have more free time on their hands and for that reason may find comfort in lending a hand to those who need it. Volunteering does not only have to be for older individuals but is a great option for younger teens, adults and children who have a bit of extra time on their hands.
