Walking is one of those activities that most people take part in everyday, one way or another. For some it may be taking the dog out for a walk, strolling through the grocery store, walking to work or just going to get the mail. Whatever the reason may be, when it comes to walking there are many benefits.

With the way gasoline price are, many people have ditched there vehicles and are now walking to get where they need to go. Instead of jumping into their car to run down the block or two for a gallon of milk or loaf of bread, many are now taking the extra few minutes needed and are walking instead.

Not only are these people getting the healthy benefits of walking, but they are saving money as well. Walking to work or to the store for a few items requires no gasoline, so money is being saved. In addition, because they have to carry whatever it is they buy, only necessary items are being bought and there is less money being spent on splurging for wanted, not needed items.

Walking is an excellent form of exercise that nearly everyone can participate in, from the young to those, higher up in age. It does not require a gym, it can be done anywhere, just get up and walk. Walking is not only fun and refreshing, it also has many health benefits.

Going on a brisk 15 to 20 minute walk will burn about 100 calories. Do this a few times a week and before long, you will notice that your body is slimmer and more defined. According to a 20-year health study on 72,000 female nurses, women who go on a brisk walk for 30 minutes a day showed a 30 to 40 percent lower risk of heart disease.

For those who have high blood pressure, walking may help get it down. Daily walks also decrease the risk of a heart attack as well as prevent depression, constipation, relieve back and arthritis pains, strengthen muscles, bones and joints, lowers stress levels, reduces the risk of gallstone surgery and much more.

Walking can be done anytime and in most conditions. It can be done with friends, family or done alone. It is also an opportunity to meet new people, other walkers that walk by, or those just out and about. There are no special skills required and no fancy equipment needed just you and comfortable pair of walking shoes.
