The Benefits of Yoga

Megan Reinbold
Believe it or not, there are numerous benefits of yoga. Most people see yoga as a form of exercise, but it is so much more than that!

1) Yoga is a good stress reliever

Although yoga is tough at times, yoga is a great stress reliever. It is so nice to come home, pop in a yoga DVD and do a session of yoga after your stressful day at work. Or, even better yet, you can take a class. Personally, I'd rather take a class- I'm much more motivated to do yoga and I look forward to relaxing afterwards.

2) Yoga eliminates tension in our bodies

Not only does it get rid of stress, yoga helps get rid of pain in your body. It is a great way to give your sore muscles a break. It may only eliminate the tension temporarily. It's probably better than going to the chiropractor, and not as expensive as a chiropractor.

3) Improves Stretching and Flexibility

Yoga can be hard, especially if you aren't that flexible. I wasn't that flexible to start with, but once I started taking yoga classes, and practiced it, my flexibility and stretching definitely improved! I am able to do some poses that I could not do at all in the beginning! Yoga must be practiced weekly (or even daily) for any improvements to be made. If you don't keep practicing yoga, and get out of shape, you will lose that flexibility and have to start over again.

4)Concentration

Yoga also helps improve your concentration. In order to achieve perfect balance on some poses, you need to concentrate on a specific spot or place (ice skaters and dancers also do this to keep from getting dizzy) where there is a decoration. If you lose focus of your concentration, you will be thrown off and quickly lose your balance. I find that it has been harder to regain your concentration after you lose your concentration.

5) Posture

Along with stress reliever, tension eliminator, improves stretching and flexibility, and concentration, posture is yet another benefit of everything that yoga has to offer. When you are practicing a pose, you must make sure that you have great posture or you could injure yourself by doing a yoga pose.

There are more than just these benefits of yoga. To find out more of the benefits later, keep reading for more articles.
