The Benefits of Yoga for the Businessman

Darlyn Stephens
Businessmen are known to have hectic, stressful lives. There's so much to do and so little time to do it all. So why would a businessman like you want to add yet another activity to his already jammed pack schedule?

If you can squeeze just a small block of time in your busy schedule, there are benefits to adding yoga to your life.

So what is your ultimate goal as a businessman? Is it to become wealthier, add more clientele, or conquer the world? Whatever the reason, you're useless to everyone if you have poor health. If you don't have your health, you have nothing. You can't conquer the corporate world from six feet under. You really can't afford to be unhealthy. A healthy mind and body allows you to do more, concentrate more, and be that much more productive.

There seems to be a stereotype going around that yoga is just for women. Or perhaps you haven't tried yoga because you don't want to look any less masculine. This is not true. If you can get past that "girly" image that may be attached to yoga, it is a great exercise that will help you take care of your physical well being.

You may be one of the many businessmen out there that does a lot of sitting, whether it's in front of the computer, sitting through a long, drawn out meeting, or attending business seminars. This causes a person to become out of shape if exercise is not a regular part of the day-to-day regimen. Whatever the case, yoga exercises are very low impact and can be performed even if you are out of shape.

Yoga is also a great way to release all that stress and tension caused by your business activities, endless hours at work and that never ending heavy workload. The more often you do yoga, the healthier you become in both mind and body. You may not know this but blockages tend to develop around your body which prevents your vital organs from receiving all the oxygen and nutrients needed to function at their best. That's where yoga comes into play. Doing such exercises stretches your muscle groups in ways that open up those blockages which in turn allows your body to receive the oxygen and nutrients more efficiently.

When a person stops breathing, they are in danger of dying. But as simplistic as it may sound, you may have ignored breathing properly because you may have been too busy working. Not only does breathing have wonderful health benefits aside from the obvious, there are mental advantages as well.

Usually, a yoga session begins with you standing and performing a breathing exercise. Taking deep breaths and releasing each one slowly has a very calming effect. You suddenly become aware of your sense of self and the benefits of controlling your breathing. Plus, learning how to slow down and breathe deeply helps you learn how to focus during stressful moments in your work environment. And I'm sure you know very well how hard it is to concentrate when you're extremely stressed out, especially when you have a deadline to meet.

As a businessman, you probably have a lot of goals that you want to reach. And to reach those goals, you have had to and will continue to sacrifice things, including your own happiness. Yoga will not help you reach your goals faster, but it can definitely teach you to be more content with the present.

As you can see, there are many benefits to adding yoga to your busy lifestyle. Now go out there and do it!
