The Best 2010 Trucks that Could Potentially Hold a High Resale Value

MrTechnical's List of the Top Five Trucks Likely with High Resale Values

Michael MrTechnical Hewitt
There are so many truck options on the market today that some folks are looking for a simpler way to determine which one of the many would be the best vehicle for them to purchase. This is definitely a complex question and for most of us it becomes just a guess based on some strange emotional pull that each vehicle has over us.

Quite a few buyers have been using the resale value of the vehicle model they are researching as one of the more important data points to use when comparing vehicles apples to apples. Higher resale values typically mean that the vehicle is in better shape and has fewer age related issues than its close competitors.

Historically the following five trucks have held very high resale values when compared to other truck models.

1) Ford F-150 Extended Cab full sized pickup truck. This is still the most popular and the top selling truck in America today! These are built tough and they are really good work trucks. Optioned with the 310 horsepower 5.4 Liter V8 engine you can get 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway. Current price for this model is around $25,885. Resale on a similar 2007 model that is clean and rust free is running around $14,500. With resale prices like these it is difficult to head out and buy a brand new one when you know that you will save thousands of dollars by going with a used model versus new.

2) Chevrolet Silverado 1500, full sized pickup truck with extended cab. This Silverado comes with some optional engines but the middle of the road engine is their 5.3 Liter V8 which yields a stout 315 horsepower which is 5 more than the F-150! Mileage is 15 in the city, and 21 on the highway which is not bad for a full size pickup! Price for this model is about $25,395. Resale on a similar 2007 model is hovering around the $15,000 mark.

3) Dodge Ram 1500, full sized pickup truck with Quad Cab. The Dodge is a really tough truck and it takes a lot to kill one of these monsters, trust me having done it once I know what I am talking about here. The average model will have the 5.7 Liter V8 engine which gives you 390 horsepower and 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway. This model would cost about $24,665 new in 2010. Average resale for the middle of the road 2007 Ram falls in around $13,000 on a truck that cost about $23,500 new.

4) Toyota Tacoma Access cab small pickup truck. This model has historically carried a very high resale value after three to five years. These have become very popular with small families that are active and homeowners that like to be the "Do It Yourself" family unit. These are offered in numerous trim packages with different engines but the middle of the road model would have the 4.0 Liter V6 engine building up to 236 horsepower, and which gets 17 mpg city, and 21 mpg on the highway.

The Tacoma has earned its place on this list and has historically held a much higher resale value than many similarly equipped models. An extended cab with four cylinder engine will cost around $22,475 in 2010, and could easily sell for over $13,000 in 2013. Recently the 2007 similar Tacoma models have been getting about $12,500.

5) Toyota Tundra Double cab Large pickup truck. Tundra is competitive with the big three full sized pickup trucks listed above. They come in a number of packages but the more popular models have the 4.6 Liter V8 engine that puts out 310 horsepower yet still delivers 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. This model with the V8 could cost you around $25,940. The resale on a 2008 model was recently $20,000 which is about the highest resale value held by this group of pickup trucks!

This list could change dramatically this year since Toyota was hit with so many recalls, but they have done an awesome marketing blitz to overshadow and spin that negative image which seems to be working.

New model pricing was found in local newspapers and dealerships down the road from me.

  • Toyota has always scored high marks on the resale value front
  • making a list of only five trucks that hold resale was hard since these are getting much better
  • finding the right vehicle that holds high resale value is about researching model pricing over time
The primary key to a vehicle holding high resale value seems to be based on consumer perception of quality and also feedback from the industry on how often a specific model has warranty issues.
