The Best 5 Appliance Paints

Kirby Rooks
My wife recently bought a 50-year old refrigerator for her 60's décor at her shop. It worked perfectly but was really scratched and rust pitted on the outside.

I purchased some spray primer rust colored since she wanted the top part red and the bottom grill silver.

I decided to go with Rust Oleam and was very pleased with the results. I first sanded the outside smooth and then sprayed the primer getting it as even as I could. Next I lightly sanded a second time. Wiped it clean of dust then sprayed the Rust Oleam Red first then the silver. It came out beautiful. The colors were nice and even with a gloss finish. I did have to put on three coats of the silver to make it even. Cost was very reasonable around $7.36 at Home Depot.

About two years ago I found some outdoor furniture. Specifically a round cast iron table and a double shelve cast iron table. They were rusted so I had them sand blasted then I primed them with a flat white spray primer. I then purchased from a local dealer Whirlpool Appliance Paint in a glossy white acrylic spray. It was quick no runs to correct and held up nicely outside for about 5 years before starting to rust again. As I recall it was only about $5 per can which is reasonable in my estimation.

Appliance paint is good stuff because it gives such a good even coverage while being tough on ordinary surfaces. Appliance paint generally is not used for surfaces that get real hot like range tops so be careful where you use it.

Another appliance paint that I have used is Krylon Epoxy Appliance Paint. The Krylon brand is one you are probably familiar as Johnny Bench used to be the spokesman on the commercials painting an exterior bench. I have used it on car rims, charcoal grill sides (not the part that gets hot), and of course appliances. I remember one time using it on a set of rusty car wheels that I painted black. I was very impressed with the shine the surface feel and the durability. What really sold me on this product was the cost as I remember it was under $5. So if you are a budget conscience person keep this product in mind and you will be pleased.

As a professional painter in my younger years I would run across painting fireplace grills and such that get hot. Also the chimney cap is another one that is quite common. You have to use specialty appliance paint for these like Stove Bright Gas Appliance Fire Box Paint. It is very expensive, as you would expect a specialty paint to be at $10 per can but it is a very high quality paint that withstands up to 1200 degrees. I never had a complaint about cracking or pealing like some people have when they use a regular appliance spray on a surface that will get some heat.

The only other appliance paint that I am familiar with but haven't actually used is Frigidaire Appliance Touch-up Paint. It is priced around the others at $7 per can but I have not seen it in either a paint or hardware store. I am familiar with it because my brother has used it and he said its ok but he had to go to an appliance service center to find it. He did that to make sure it matched his white refrigerator and it did, so he was happy.

Hope you found this helpful and your appliance is now sparkling.

Very useful information - I tried to spray a stove once... wish I had this information first! I would have avoided a disaster!
