The problem with Candyland is that there are no player decisions in this game at all. The outcome is determined entirely by chance. The same could be said for Chutes and Ladders. The game board and pieces are beautiful and they appeal to kids but there's no real game play beyond tossing the dice to determine moves. As an alternative, I would recommend Parcheesi or Ludo or a variant called Aggravation for older children and adults. In a game like Parcheesi or Aggravation, the game board allows players to make decisions on where to move their pieces which I think makes for a better game.

Triviathon is a good game for young kids because you don't have to know the answers to play or even win. (And they learn as they play.)
