The Best Books for Teaching Children Letters

Librarian Recommended Titles for Teaching the Alphabet

Emily Harmon
As a school librarian I am often asked questions about what books are most appropriate for teaching particular concepts. As the mother of a toddler I am currently teaching my son to recognize letters and know the alphabet. Books are so helpful when teaching a child his letters. Here are this librarian and toddler mom's picks for the best books to help teach your child letters.

Eric Carle's A B C by Eric Carle. Eric Carle is one of my favorite children's authors and illustrators, and this colorful book is perfect for helping teach your child letters. The block style letters are easy to read and recognize for toddlers. Each letter is tied to an animal name so your child will love looking at the animals and learning the animal names while he also learns his letters. The block-style, colorful letters are created in classic Eric Carle style and are fun to look at it over and over again.

Baby Einstein: My First Book of Letters by Julie Aigner-Clark. Baby Einstein books always promote thinking skills and creativity in young children. The Baby Einstein First Book of Letters is no exception. This quality board book includes letters in both upper-case and lower-case and poses questions for your child to answer that correspond with each letter. This colorful book is great for helping teach your child letters.

Dr. Seuss's A B C by Dr. Seuss. Everyone loves Dr. Seuss and he lends his wonderful writing and illustrating talents to this great book for helping teach your child letters. Readers find Dr. Seuss's classic nonsensical writing and zany illustrations through this alphabet book. The letters are block style, solid-colored and easy to read. Your child will love learning his letters while reading this fun book.

Kipper's A to Z An Alphabet Adventure by Mike Inkpen. Mike Inkpen's adorable illustrations are perfect for this great paperback book for helping teach your child letters. Children follow the little dog Kipper as he works his way through the entire alphabet, finding items to go along with each letter. The clean, solid font used for the letters in this book makes them easy to read for young eyes. This book tells more of a story than the other letter teaching books so it may be more entertaining for some children.

Teaching your child his letters can be a time consuming project! Help make the alphabet more fun and interesting for both you and your child by utilizing these wonderful books to help teach your child letters.
