Ingredients
• 1 package bratwurst
• 1 red onion
• 1 can Guinness beer
• ½ package sliced mushrooms
The first thing you will need to do is prepare a pot for boiling your brats. By pre-cooking them on the stove, you will reduce the time they are on the grill and you will seal in a delicious flavor. To do this, place bratwurst in the pot. Next, pour Guinness over brats and add water if necessary to make sure there is at least an extra inch of liquid in the pot. Once you have that done, slice your red onion and add it to the pot. Next, add the mushrooms and stir to make sure you have ingredients mixed throughout.
Place pot on the stove and bring to a boil. Once the brats begin to boil, stir them and watch for the casings to begin to open on both ends of the bratwurst. At this point, turn off the pot to keep the brats from over-cooking on the stove.
Once your grill is warmed up, place brats on the grill. Cook until they turn a nice shade of brown and turn. Do this on all sides to give the casing a slightly crispy texture. While you are turning, look for pockets of grease that may be waiting to burst. This will not harm the flavor of the brat, but you are likely to get burned if you aren't paying attention.
For the ultimate brat experience, place sauerkraut in aluminum foil and wrap tightly. Place this on the grill, away from direct flame and heat, while you are cooking the bratwurst.
To serve your bratwurst, it is best to have a slightly harder roll that will withstand the moisture in both the brats and the sauerkraut. For condiments, your guests will thank you for some chopped, raw onion and a good brown mustard.
Bratwurst is a very easy main dish for your Oktoberfest get-together. By adding a couple of ingredients to the water when you boil your brats, you are sure to serve a dish that your guests will be talking about and asking how you got that much flavor out of a classic German sausage.
