Burgers are a staple in American culture. With an assortment of toppings such as cheese, bacon, onions, olives and even pineapple, burger enthusiasts have revolutionized this popular sandwich.

Muskegon and its surrounding communities offer a number of great burger joints. Some are more upscale while others provide a nostalgic drive-in dining experience.

The Station Grill on Broadway in Roosevelt Park, Michigan

This extremely popular restaurant and area hangout is located in the nearby suburb of Roosevelt Park, just blocks from the Muskegon city limits. It offers a fun and relaxing place to dine and meet up with friends. The building itself maintains its uniqueness as a former gas and service station. In keeping with this theme, the owners have decorated the dining room with a life size replica of half a corvette which hangs from the wall. With delicious and innovative toppings like olive mayonnaise, guacamole, pineapple, broccoli and jalapeno cheese, the steak burger is possibly the Station Grill's signature sandwich. Burgers average $8-$9 each and are served with lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. Fries must be purchased separately.

Ray's Drive-In on Beacon Boulevard in Grand Haven, Michigan

Offering the best in 50's style dining, Ray's Drive-In is a clear favorite amongst area burger joints. Most known for both their burgers and milkshakes, this restaurant is popular with teens and young children. Nothing fancy here, just basic, good old fashioned hamburgers, fries and shakes. Additionally, this in not a dine in restaurant. In the summer however, you can dine outdoors or drive over to the beach (which is just minutes away). Ray's is also one of the most economical burger joints in the area with a meal of a burger, fries and shake costing less than $10.

Booyah's on Harvey Street in Fruitport, Michigan

A newbie to the community, Booyah's is quickly becoming a weekend hot spot. At Booyah's you don't just order a burger from the menu, instead you create your own custom burger. First you begin by choosing your meat(s). One very popular selection is the prime rib burger. Many patrons also choose a second meat for their burger. Some choices include double burgers (of course), chicken, Italian sausage, corned beef, turkey, ham or bacon. Next, what type of cheese would you like on your burger? Some options include Pepper Jack, feta, smoked cheddar and Swiss. Now, put the final touches on your burger with additional toppings such as fried egg, onion rings, fries, dressing, spicy sauce or even peanut butter. Burgers range from as low as $4 to as high as around $10 (depending upon number of toppings). Booyah's is located on Harvey Street just minutes from US-31 and the Lakes Mall.

Other restaurants deserving honorable mention for their burgers include Bonfire, Mango's and Carmen's Cafe (downtown).

Every so often everyone just has to have a burger. I had that moment a few weeks ago!
