If I had to describe Nickelodeon with cartoons, I would first mention SpongeBob SquarePants, then Avatar, and then Rugrats for sure. Rugrats was one of Nickelodeon's greatest hits. Over 170 episodes have been made since its conception in 1991, and even rewatching it as an adult has not become dull.

The Rugrats is about the various adventures Tommy Pickles and his friends have throughout their days as babies. These Rugrats stories take place in various locations from playgrounds, to hotels, to their playpens at home. With their iconic mascot Reptar the green dinosaur, Rugrats told amazing tales accompanied by classic humor.

First, the adventures that Tommy Pickles and his friends have are simply amazing to watch to say the least. In the Rugrats Episode "The 'Lympics'," Tommy and his friends compete with another group of babies in Olympic styled events at a local playground. Humorously, the events that they compete in parallel real Olympic events. However, they are "baby-fied," so events such as the javelin are replaced by the rattle toss.

In addition, the superb thing about Rugrats cartoons is the underlying humor that pervades all their episodes. A good example includes the various malapropisms they use. Examples include "bestest" or "worstest," and viewers can't help but snicker at the usage.

I would certainly say that the Rugrats certainly characterize some of Nickelodeon's more successful programming. Whether you are a child or an adult, you can't help but feel nostalgia for a younger past when watching this series.

Fairly Odd Parents

Another one of Nickelodeon's television jewels is the Fairly Odd Parents. The Fairly Odd Parents is a fairly eccentric show, if I don't say so myself. Starring the neglected boy Timmy Turner, two fairies named Wanda and Cosmo come to him because he lives a miserable life. Worsened by brainless parents and a sinister baby sister, the fairies brighten Timmy's day with excitement. The great thing about the fairies is that they grant wishes, and the adventures that Timmy has with Cosmo and Wanda knows no bounds.

I think the reason for the show's success as a show comes from two factors: the vivid adventures that Timmy has and the limitless possibilities of being able to make wishes whenever you want.

You would think that a story about a child being able to wish for anything would be dull, but that is leagues from the truth. What makes the adventures Timmy has so exciting is his failure to wish well. Timmy always makes very poor wishes, and he always takes the long route to resolve the problem. For example, he might wish for a giant volcano to be in his town. If a catastrophic eruption occurs, he does not resolve the problem by wishing that the volcano disappeared. No sir, he would rather wish for ten tons of ice cubes to cool down the volcano. Yet, I suppose the ridiculous nature of Timmy's wishes is what makes the show so great.

The second appeal of the Fairly Odd Parents comes from the desire for all children to have what they want. As a kid, I have always been enthralled by the concept of the genie and wishing for anything. It's without a doubt that children feel the same way. Not only will they be captivated by the show's hilarious plot structure but also by the lavish concept of wishing.

From the way I see it, the Fairly Odd Parents is just a ridiculously good concept. There are limitless boundaries to plots and infinite destinations; I really think that it has the most potential for success as a show. The Fairly Odd Parents is humorous and light-hearted, and I'd say it's a great characterization of Nickelodeon's excellent visual repertoire.
