The Best Cartoons of Nickelodeon

Dick Johnson
Nickelodeon has been one of the powerhouses of cartoon programming since its conception in 1979. Since then, it has dished out some amazing television shows, including notable titles such as Avatar and Spongebob. Today, it is one of the most well-known stations in entertaining television programming. Now, let's take a look at the television gems that made Nickelodeon so great.

SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob SquarePants is one of the salient factors contributing to Nickelodeon's great achievements. Created by Marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg, its premiere in 1999 was met with immediate success. Since then, a series of new episodes have been released, solidifying SpongeBob SquarePants's place in television history. The show itself centralizes around a marine sponge named SpongeBob and his adventures with various other sea creatures such as Patrick Star and Squidward Tentacles. The reason why SpongeBob SquarePants is such a popular show comes from a variety of factors such as its beautiful animation and light-hearted humor.

Without a doubt, humor is the most significant attribute contributing to this series' success. Various puns, ironies, and simple jests make it a wonderful experience for even adults to watch. Sea critters often shout humorous words such as "fish paste" or "barnacles" in place of vulgar interjections, and the show is characterized by various small jokes such as the critters making fires underwater. A great example of this humor comes from "SpongeBob SquarePants: Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III." In a series of ironic plot twists and hilarious encounters, Spongebob and Patrick are able to turn even the most sinister of characters into a law-abiding citizen. In "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV," humor shows itself again. In the episode, Spongebob finds Mermaid Man's belt and realizes that it possesses power of magnanimous proportions. Unfortunately, he abuses this power and shrinks everyone in town. However, Patrick fatuously suggests that he set the belt to "wumbo" in order to make everyone larger. Without a doubt, you have to see these jokes on television to give it proper Spongebob-worthy praise.

Moreover, the vivid coloring and beautiful animation makes SpongeBob Squarepants a remarkable work of art. Each scene or environment is characterized by detailed oceanic themes, and the carefree coloring of characters make it very enjoyable to watch. Moreover, unlike many other cartoons, SpongeBob is devoid of grotesque or scary animations. I feel that this factor connects with children especially well and gives it the seal of approval from parents.

Without a doubt, Spongebob SquarePants has been one of the most significant accomplishments Nickelodeon has achieved. Then again, this should be no surprise considering the more than ten years that this television series has aired.

Avatar the Last Airbender

Avatar the Last Airbender is another amazing creation aired by Nickelodeon. The series centralizes around Aang and his friends, who must rescue the world from chaotic destruction. Aang, also known as the Avatar, is the main protagonist of the show. The ancient world that is depicted in the series is divided in to four nations: Water, Air, Fire, and Earth. The inhabitants of each nation are able to control their corresponding element, and Aang's goal is to learn how to control each of the four elements and finally spread peace throughout the warring world.

The defining factor of this series comes from its beautiful storyline. Divided into three chapters, the first centralizes around Aang's quest to master the water element. The second chapter focuses on Aang's development of "earth bending" or learning the earth element, and the final chapter focuses on the Avatar's endeavors to master the fire element.

Through this riveting journey, Aang takes us through all the continents of the ancient world, immersing viewers with beautiful scenes of culture and adventure. Each episode is masterfully crafted to advance the story step-by-step to its final tantalizing conclusion. I apologize for staying vague, it is because I do not want to spoil to storyline for readers. However, I will tell you this: Avatar the Last Airbender is an excellent series and will not be a disappointment.

Rugrats

If I had to describe Nickelodeon with cartoons, I would first mention SpongeBob SquarePants, then Avatar, and then Rugrats for sure. Rugrats was one of Nickelodeon's greatest hits. Over 170 episodes have been made since its conception in 1991, and even rewatching it as an adult has not become dull.

The Rugrats is about the various adventures Tommy Pickles and his friends have throughout their days as babies. These Rugrats stories take place in various locations from playgrounds, to hotels, to their playpens at home. With their iconic mascot Reptar the green dinosaur, Rugrats told amazing tales accompanied by classic humor.

The remarkable thing about the Rugrats is their ability to balance great humor with great storytelling. First, the adventures that Tommy Pickles and his friends have are simply amazing to watch to say the least. In the Rugrats Episode "The 'Lympics'," Tommy and his friends compete with another group of babies in Olympic styled events at a local playground. Humorously, the events that they compete in parallel real Olympic events. However, they are "baby-fied," so events such as the javelin are replaced by the rattle toss.

In addition, the superb thing about Rugrats cartoons is the underlying humor that pervades all their episodes. A good example includes the various malapropisms they use. Examples include "bestest" or "worstest," and viewers can't help but snicker at the usage.

I would certainly say that the Rugrats certainly characterize some of Nickelodeon's more successful programming. Whether you are a child or an adult, you can't help but feel nostalgia for a younger past when watching this series.

Fairly Odd Parents

Another one of Nickelodeon's television jewels is the Fairly Odd Parents. The Fairly Odd Parents is a fairly eccentric show, if I don't say so myself. Starring the neglected boy Timmy Turner, two fairies named Wanda and Cosmo come to him because he lives a miserable life. Worsened by brainless parents and a sinister baby sister, the fairies brighten Timmy's day with excitement. The great thing about the fairies is that they grant wishes, and the adventures that Timmy has with Cosmo and Wanda knows no bounds.

I think the reason for the show's success as a show comes from two factors: the vivid adventures that Timmy has and the limitless possibilities of being able to make wishes whenever you want.

You would think that a story about a child being able to wish for anything would be dull, but that is leagues from the truth. What makes the adventures Timmy has so exciting is his failure to wish well. Timmy always makes very poor wishes, and he always takes the long route to resolve the problem. For example, he might wish for a giant volcano to be in his town. If a catastrophic eruption occurs, he does not resolve the problem by wishing that the volcano disappeared. No sir, he would rather wish for ten tons of ice cubes to cool down the volcano. Yet, I suppose the ridiculous nature of Timmy's wishes is what makes the show so great.

The second appeal of the Fairly Odd Parents comes from the desire for all children to have what they want. As a kid, I have always been enthralled by the concept of the genie and wishing for anything. It's without a doubt that children feel the same way. Not only will they be captivated by the show's hilarious plot structure but also by the lavish concept of wishing.

From the way I see it, the Fairly Odd Parents is just a ridiculously good concept. There are limitless boundaries to plots and infinite destinations; I really think that it has the most potential for success as a show. The Fairly Odd Parents is humorous and light-hearted, and I'd say it's a great characterization of Nickelodeon's excellent visual repertoire.

Without a doubt, Nickelodeon has been one of the most significant television stations in the name of children's programming. However, I would certainly characterize its achievements to these four main cartoons. Not only have these Nickelodeon productions revolutionized the way their station is perceived, it has also set the standard for what cartoons ought be. These shows serve as a reminder to what television programming is and also to what it should be in the future.
