The Best City in South America: Rio De Janeiro

Brazil has many vibrant cities including Sao Paulo and Salvador. Yet, for me, the best city in all of South America is Rio de Janeiro. The warm climate, beautiful beaches and exciting culture makes Rio de Janeiro one of the most memorable cities in South America. Here is a guide to some of the most enjoyable highlights of Rio de Janeiro. Whether you want a lively party atmosphere (which Rio is known for) or complete escape, you'll find something in Rio de Janeiro to suit your style.

Rio de Janeiro has been chosen as the host of the 2016 Olympics, a first for this South American city. The culture, music and dance of Rio de Janeiro will make the city a memorable setting for the Olympic Games. Already, the city is working to upgrade its city spaces, accommodation and stadiums so that there will be even more to do and see in Rio de Janeiro.

One of the best times to visit Rio de Janeiro is New Year's. The most well-known New Year's Eve party in Brazil is the Fiesta de Iemanjá in Rio de Janeiro. Revellers go to the beaches to offer flowers and gifts to Iemanjá, the Goddess of the Water in the Brazilian Umbanda religion. About two million people go to Copacabana beach for Réveillon. There you can watch the thousands of candles float to sea.

For a quiet day out, visit Rio de Janeiro's famous Botanical Garden. This is a wonderful place to see the exotic plants of South America. There are fruit trees, palms, bamboos, and many different types of orchids. If you want a serene escape from the bustling city, the Botanical Garden is the place to go.

Rio de Janeiro is, of course, famous for its beaches. There are many to choose from. The beaches at Leme, Copacabana, Ipaneman and Barra are just a few. Make sure to check beach rules and regulations before visiting.

Another highlight of Rio de Janeiro is the famous Copacabana Palace Hotel, where you can sip champagne and survey the vibrant city from the balcony.

Lastly, a list of Rio de Janeiro's attractions would not be complete without including Carnaval. Rio De Janeiro Carnaval will take place in 2010 February 13, 14, 15, 16.

Convinced about what Rio de Janeiro has to offer? The best way to be convinced is to see Rio de Janeiro for yourself. The Rio Convention and Visitor's Bureau has lots of information on hotels, shopping and transportation.
