Glitz and Glamour has it's place in this town, but not on an empty stomach. And not every "best place in town" slaps you with a cover charge higher than your car payment. Here are some tried and true down to earth diners in the Greater Los Angeles and Hollywood area that are sure to please.

1. The 101 Coffee Shop, located at 6145 Franklin ave, Hollywood Ca, 90028
Telephone: (323)467-1175
Open Daily 7 to 3am

With it's funky retro styling, right out the 1960's, you get the feeling that the world is a simple and safe place again. The menu is a perfect match for me with tofu and soy deliciously whipped into sumptous meals. For a perfect vegan breakfast , try the "Ranchero No Huevos" made with tofu, black beans, soy and rice. At only $7.95, you can't beat that. Besides vegetarian dishes, there's plenty for carnivores, too.Try the steak and eggs or Smoked Salmon Scramble for a big and hearty meal. Topped it off with a tall cappuccino, and you're all set for the day.

The rest of the menu is chock full of American favorites like burgers, clubs, pasta and sandwiches, all well under $10.00. And no greasy spoon here, the 101 Coffee Shop is owned by famed chef Brandon Boudet and brings us such treats as Cajun Catfish and Eggs and Grilled Portebello and Spinach Salad with change back on a ten.

2. King's Road Cafe, located at 8361 Beverly blvd, Los Angeles, Ca 90048

The King's Road Cafe is the perfect blend of California casual with a fine dining taste. Though the name of the restaurant sounds like a British pub, it's actually an American/Mexican place with outdoor umbrella tables. The cafe's located on Beverly blvd, but the cross street is King's Road, hence the name. This is another hot spot for dependable vegetarian meals from the breakfast entree of mixed vegetable omlette to the luncheon's vegetarian burrito with sweet potato and spanish rice.

Prices at King's Road are fair and affordable with an average plate under $10. By popular demand, specialty coffees and lattees are made available with organic soy milk for an extra 50 cents. The ourdoor dining, in a nice part of town, makes this cafe a favorite healthy and relaxing place for lunch.

3. Pinks, located at 709 N. La Brea blvd, Los Angeles, Ca 90038
Telephone: (323)931-4223
Hours: Mon-Fri 9:30-2am, weekends til 3am

Everybody knows and loves Pink's in this town. The quality of food and rock bottom prices are unbeatable. This brightly colored pink restaurant is busy from morning til night, so be prepared to stand in line. There's small diner-style tables inside and you may get a seat if you can wriggle past Jay Leno and snatch a chair from the Aerosmith band. If not, take your burger and join the ranks of happy campers that scarf their food standing on the sidewalk. Famous for their gourmet -styled Hoffey brand beef hotdogs, Pink's also makes teriffic chili and hamburgers. Their classic chili burger is only $3.65, at about half of what you'd expect to pay elsewhere. Or try the giant sized double pastrami and swiss for just $6.85. And poultry lovers might like the chicken fajita burrito for five dollars and change. Coffee prices are super low at 70 cents, and even their chocolate desserts are under $3.00. Perfect recipes and value priced meals makes Pink's the famous place it has been since 1939.
