The Best I Could

Ryan Farley

I am going to disappoint you.

Of that there is no doubt.

As a baby;

so small and young,

I'll give you all you need.

As you grow,

I'll teach you

what you need to know.

The alphabet

And 1, 2, 3's

Colors,

Shapes, and sizes,

and every word

you will know how to speak.

But I will disappoint you.

I know I'll let you down.

I will be the one

to show you

life isn't always fair.

Tell you no

and make you

clean your room

and change into

"more suitable" clothes.

For this you'll say you hate me.

I'm ruining your life.

But I'll teach you

how to drive a car

and about

the birds and bees.

Give you money

to go to the mall.

A credit card

To buy your prom dress.

Even still,

Somehow I'll disappoint you.

Perhaps you'll never

let it go.

Hopefully, we'll both move on,

but only time will tell

Because in all my love,

and all my care

I will no doubt disappoint you.

Some how,

some way,

I will let you down.

But I am only human.

And as every mother

before and after

I'll utter those famous words

I did the best I could.
