The Best Cures for Snoring

Kevin Nurmi
How many times have you been awoken by your spouse snoring? How about when his or her snoring kept you awake for hours on end? Chances are, you or someone you know snores. It is a very common condition that many people have learned to just ignore it and live with it.

Ever wonder what causes snoring? It is the loose hanging tissues hang in the back of your throat that are stopping you from being able to breathe normally. It only happens at night because this is when your body and throat muscles are most relaxed. Sometimes, when you fall asleep, your jaw drops, causing your tongue to fall into the back of your throat, stopping up your clear breathing path. Because of that, the pressure that goes through your throat is doubled causing a vibration. The resulting noise is that annoying snoring. One way to help prevent this is to not sleep on your back. Sleeping on your side instead can help reduce snoring.

If you have trouble sleeping on your side, or staying on your side when you're asleep, there is a trick you can try. Take a tennis ball and put it in a sock. Then sew or safety pin the sock to the center of your back. Doing this will cause discomfort when you fall onto your back in the night, thus causing you to go back onto your side.

Another cause of snoring is being overweight. If you are overweight you are more likely to snore. The extra weight carried on your neck could push down on your relaxed throat causing you to have more difficulty breathing. The only real remedy to this is to reduce your weight. In doing so you will not only get the benefits of not snoring, but you would also be living a healthier lifestyle. It would take time and work to lose weight and it cannot happen over night. With increased efforts though, you would gain many benefits, one being that you would have less of a chance of snoring.

Many of us like to be as relaxed as we can be. Sometimes we will have a few drinks on a Friday night to help accomplish this. Unfortunately, this will lead to an even worse case of snoring. The extra relaxed state of mind will allow for even more pressure to be put on your throat by your extra weight or your tongue.

Be sure to go to bed at around the same time every night. Make sure you get enough sleep so that the next night you don't become even more relaxed and snore even worse. By having a good sleep pattern, you cause your body to react better to each sleep. It may not stop snoring completely, but it can help reduce the volume of your snoring.

If you can help it, try to breathe through your nose instead of your mouth. Often times, this is the main reason for snoring. When you breathe with your mouth open, your jaw drops, causing your tongue to press on your throat constricting your airway making you snore.

As you can see, there are many easy steps you can take to prevent or even cure your snoring. Sleeping in the right position, for the right amount of time, every night is very helpful. Be sure to not force your body into a deepened state of relaxation, causing more pressure to be able to push on your throat, and be sure to keep yourself at a healthy body weight, so you can breathe easier.
