The sprawling hills in the Pittsburgh area are home to some great hiking trails with breathtaking views and beautiful waterfalls. There are trails for every hiker from the gentle trails to the strenuous mountains. So, put on your hiking boots, grab your water bottle and enjoy some of the best hiking trails in the Northeast.

Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail

The Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail is rated one of the best hiking trails in the country. It is easily accessible, has many amenities and has beautiful scenery. The hiking trail is located on top of the Laurel Ridge and runs from Johnstown, PA to Ohiopyle State Park. June is a great time to hike the trail when the Rhododendrons are blooming and it is especially beautiful in mid to late October when the fall leaves are the most brilliant.

Raccoon Creek State Park Hiking Trail

Raccoon Creek State Park is a beautiful park located just a short 30 minute drive from downtown Pittsburgh. Raccoon offers making hiking options for the amateur and the expert hiker. The trail is approximately five to six miles long and the trails will take you into a beautiful wildflower reserve that is especially beautiful in the spring.

Rachel Carson Trail

The Rachel Carson Trail is located just north of downtown Pittsburgh. This sprawling trail is over 35 miles long and runs between North Park and Harrison Hills County Park. The trail includes paved roads and steep and rugged terrain. Popular spots along the trail are Hartwood Acres in Indiana Township and the Rachel Carson Homestead located in Sprindale.

Meadow Run Trail

The Meadow Run Trail is located in Ohiopyle State Park. This is the perfect trail for amateur hikers. This is a short three mile trail that will take you by relaxing waterfalls, cool mountain streams and natural water slides. This is a great summer trail because of the forest shade and the cool mountain waters.
