A couple of days ago I was at my local Starbucks, the one inside that fabulous book store, Barnes and Noble. I ordered a Skinny Iced Brewed Coffee with non-fat milk. They had just happened to run out of coffee and they had to brew some fresh, so I was able to watch the entire process of making my drink from start to finish. Of course, that made my mind start spinning. I had discovered the secret to Starbucks Iced Brewed Coffee, and it wasn't hard to recreate. After drinking my $2.00 coffee, I hurried home and headed to my kitchen. Here is my recipe for the best ever Skinny Iced Brewed Coffee with Non-fat Milk, and it is only a fraction of the cost of coffee house coffee.
Iced Brewed Coffee with Non-Fat Milk
Ingredients:
Your favorite coffee beans
Non-fat milk
Cubed Ice
Optional sweetener of your choice
There are no special tricks for making a Skinny Iced Brewed Coffee with non-fat milk. All you have to do is make coffee the way you normally would. I use plain unflavored coffee beans from First Colony, (they can be purchased in bulk at your local Sam's Club), but a flavored bean would help to make this drink extra special. For one pot of coffee I typically use ¼ cup coffee beans, and grind them for automatic drip. If you've never tried whole coffee beans, I would recommend them heartily. They have a richer cleaner flavor with no fillers!
To make several Skinny Iced Brewed Coffees with non-fat milk at once follow these directions.
Take a small 2 quart pitcher, and fill it half full of ice. Next, pour hot coffee over the ice in the pitcher, and leave about three inches of the pitcher empty from the top. Fill the iced coffee mixture with non-fat milk to the top of the pitcher.
If you'd rather make it by the cup, add ice just like you would in the pitcher, and then add coffee. Make sure you leave enough room for your desired amount of non-fat milk.
There are a couple of ways to flavor your iced brewed coffee. One way to flavor your drink is to add a shot of your favorite coffee flavoring. When using store bought syrups, I like the sugar-free non-alcoholic Kahlua flavoring in my drinks, as well as the sugar -free non-alcoholic Irish crème. But, there are times when I'm out of the store bought flavorings and must make my own. It's then that I use a tsp. of almond extract instead of the fancy coffee syrups (That is for a whole pitcher, I would use less per glass.)
Make sure that when you add flavorings add it after the coffee and before the milk, and stir well. This will ensure that the flavor is incorporated well through out the drink.
A Skinny Iced Brewed Coffee with non-fat milk can be enjoyed either sweet or unsweetened. I like to add a packet of Sweet'n Low to my drink. Of course, any sweetener can be used.
This drink by the pitcher, is great when serving a large gathering of coffee drinkers. In my house, I have five coffee drinkers, and making an Iced Brewed Coffee by the pitcher saves a lot of time.
The Skinny Iced Brewed Coffee with non-fat milk is really great for people on restrictive diets. It is a drink that feels really decadent without all of the calories, fat, and carbohydrates! Of course, if you don't have any diet restrictions you could substitute the non-fat milk with cream, half and half, or whole milk.
