The Best February Songs

Foo Fighters, Goo Goo Dolls and Josh Groban Recorded Memorable February Tunes

The month of February isn't mentioned in popular songs as often as some other months, but you can still find a number of excellent February songs from all genres of music.

February seems to evoke a sense of melancholy and reflection, since many of these songs are slow, thoughtful ballads. Here's a list of the best February songs, counted down from seven to one.

7 "February" by Jesus Jones
British alternative rock band Jesus Jones broke through in 1990 with the post-Cold War celebratory anthem "Right Here, Right Now." Then, they promptly disappeared. Actually, they continued to record music, like the song "February" from their 1997 album Already. The 7-minute song is very odd, with heavily-reverbed vocals, screams of anguish, and a dark, moody tempo.

6 "February" by Christina Courtin
Juilliard School graduate Christina Courtin released the elegant "February" in 2009. Courtin's beautiful voice carries the track, while her violin playing matches the mood as she sings, "Come and brave the cold with me, my love." The song appears on her debut album, released on Nonesuch Records.

5 "February Love" by The-Dream
Most of the songs on this list are quiet rock or folk songs with lyrics about the cold of winter. The glaring exception is "February Love" by hip hop producer The-Dream. Taken from his 2010 album Love King, the song finds the singer railing against the haters while asking a girl to be his February love. Over a restrained R&B beat, Dream sings, "I know this may sound stalkerish / But that's because you are the sh--."

4 "Two Days in February" by Goo Goo Dolls
Maybe the Goo Goo Dolls just record songs with months in the title to get on lists like these - they also appeared on our list of The Best January Songs with "January Friend." The final track on the band's 1990 album Hold Me Up, "Two Days in February" was a tuneful, acoustic number that foreshadowed their later hits like "Name" and "Iris."

3 "February Air" by Lights
Canadian synth-pop singer Valerie Poxleitner, known as Lights, recorded a minor hit in her native country in 2008 with "February Air," a breezy, melodic pop song. The 23-year-old from Timmins, Ontario (Shania Twain's hometown) even released a bright, futuristic music video for the song that comes across as a pop art take on intergalactic travel.

2 "February Song" by Josh Groban
Renowned vocalist and pianist Josh Groban recorded "February Song" for his 2006 album Awake. The emotional ballad builds to a crescendo with strings and guitar as Groban belted out the lyrics. The songwriting credits are fascinating: Groban co-wrote the track with Five for Fighting singer John Ondrasik and longtime Madonna collaborator Marius de Vries.

1 "February Stars" by Foo Fighters
On "February Stars," Dave Grohl sings softly and sweetly for three minutes, before loud electric guitars kick in and take the song to a new place. Grohl called it "a song about hanging on by the tips of your fingers and hoping you don't slip and fall." The cool thing about this track is that it might have been a Nirvana song if Kurt Cobain had lived - Grohl and Krist Novoselic actually recorded a demo of the track. As it is, "February Stars" is the best February song.
