The Best Foods to Choose on the Flat Belly Diet

Marcia Frost
The "Flat Belly Diet" follows similar principles to the Mediterranean diet. According to the editors of Prevention Magazine, who originated the diet, you will lose more fat in your stomach if you eat at least one at every meal.

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are great foods to eliminate belly fat. The best nuts are almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, peanuts, pecans, hazelnuts, pine nuts, macadamia nuts, pistachios and walnuts. Sunflower, pumpkin and sesame seeds also help reduce belly fat. Eat these seeds and nuts as snacks or in foods like peanut butter or tahini (a paste of sesame seed). Also try sprinkling nuts and seeds on a salad.

Avocados and Olives

Avocados (the main ingredient in guacamole) and black and green olives are MUFAs(monounsaturated fatty acids that can eliminate belly fat. Avocados can also be used instead of mayonnaise (it has the same spreadable consistency). Snack on them or spread some tapenade (made from olives) on crackers. Get creative with avocados and olives by chopping them up and mixing them in salads or your favorite recipes.

Chocolate

Chocolate may not be a diet food, but it can help eliminate belly fat. The key is moderation. A quarter cup is a serving size. Dark chocolate is the best as it's loaded with antioxidants, but semisweet is also alright. Eat some chips or a small chunk. Try chocolate pudding or yogurt, add some chocolate chips to your pancakes or waffles, or shave some into your oatmeal at breakfast.

Oils
It's possible to make any food capable of getting rid of belly fat by pairing it with the right oil. Olive, canola, peanut, safflower, soybean, sesame, sunflower and walnut oil are all helpful in eliminating belly fat. Use them to sauté or when grilling food. You can also drizzle one of these belly fat-fighting oils over a salad or vegetables.
