The Best Free Credit Report Online

Elizabeth Damons
Under Federal Law you have the right to receive a free copy of your credit report once every 12 months. This is something most everyone would like to do. The best online free credit reporting site to use is annualcreditreport.com. On this site you will be offered 3 Nationwide Consumer Credit reporting Companies to choose from. Transunion, Experian, and Equifax.

You will start off by filling in your full name, birth date, social security number, and current address, previous address if current has been under 2 years. You will then choose a credit reporting company you would like your free credit report from. You will proceed by answering a few verification questions, these questions will ask about a loan you have with a banking facility and the amount of the loan, and it will give multiple choice answers. You are to mark the correct box. Remember, this is for verification only.

Once you report shows up online, your credit report will read as follows:
Personal Information

Public Records-You may be required to explain public record items to potential creditors. Bankruptcy information will remain on your report for 10 years form the date of filing. All other public records including discharged chapter 13 bankruptcy, remains for up to 7 years.

Account Information-A brief explanation of how some creditors will report how you make payments each month in relation to your agreement with them.

Adverse Accounts-Names of the accounts that contain information that some creditors may consider to be adverse. These accounts and information may generally be reported years from the date of the first delinquency, depending on your state of residence.

Satisfactory Accounts-The following accounts are reported with no adverse information

Regular Inquiries-Companies that have received your credit report. These inquiries remain on your credit report for two years.

Promotional Inquiries-Companies that have received your name, address, and other limited information about you so they could make a firm offer of credit. These companies did not receive your full credit report. These inquiries are not seen by anyone but you and do not affect your credit score.

Account Review Inquiries-These companies listed have obtained information from your consumer report for the purpose of an account review or other business transaction. These inquiries are not displayed to anyone but you and will not affect any creditor's decision or any score.

Consumer Rights-A summary of your rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act

You then have the option of saving this report and/or printing

I used this service and it was very helpful. I found derogative reporting that I was unaware of and after clearing it up, my credit score improved significantly. It's a really good idea to obtain your credit reports and check them out. One never knows what might be lurking there!
