The Best of Friends

You are my friend
my best of friends
you are there when everyone
else is at work

It's summer and most
are at the beach
or a pool or playground
letting the kids run and run around

My youngest is colicky and
the three year old snotty
the crying is starting to get to me
the back door opens and you are there

My fever is spiking and there
is throw up on my shirt
the one year old and I lay on the couch
while the older is running amok

When the phone rings I pray
and yes it is you
and yes you may scoop up the little devil
to go to your house to play

We exchange recipes and
whole meals in Tupperware
I do for you and you do for me
mud pies at your house playdoh at mine

Hugs all around at the preschool door
we stand and wait and peer
through the window
we smile and laugh at each others tears

We share our joys and sorrows
we are there in the middle of the night
graduations, car wrecks and beer
fondly we remember the boredom of the past

We are the best of friends
we don't have peanut butter and tea anymore
strollers and waiting up are long gone
but somewhere I know you are there.
