The Best Fshing Spot in Catawba, North Carolina

Molly's Backbone is the Best Fishing Spot in Catawba North Carolina

Randy Inman
I am going to share my best fishing spot in Catawba, North Carolina for any interested fishermen. I have not owned a boat in a few years so I will stress the bank fishing aspect of this spot. The best fishing spot in Catawba, North Carolina is off Molly's Backbone Road. See the map here at Mapquest for the exact location.

The best fishing spot in Catawba County is off Molly's Backbone road in the cove between Rowe Street and Energy Lane. There is ample room for two to three carloads of fishermen to fish and park there at the bridge. You can even put in a canoe there at the bridge and go a good distance up the cove. Once I saw some people canoe up the cove and come back out with the biggest turtle I have ever seen not in a zoo.

If you come in by boat into the cove be careful near the little bridge as there is a big sandbar to your left as you come in. Sometimes it is covered and sometimes it is not. If you stay to the right you should be ok to within about 50 feet of the bridge. Fish the shoreline on your left because there is a fairly deep spot there that fish sometimes can be found there.

The reasons the cove on Molly's Backbone is the best fishing spot in Catawba, are ease of access, plentiful numbers of fish and variety of fish in the cove. The only Alligator Gar I have seen in person, I saw in that cove back in 2007. I saw it several times over a three week period and always at night.

My son and I were fishing there also in 2007 trying to catch catfish. Using chicken liver he caught a Largemouth Bass (I thought that was odd) that was about 18 inches long. If you want to catch bream for eating, bait or fun go on the other side of the bridge away from the main cove. Go around the first bend and fish from the right side bank, as it would look if you were standing on the bridge. I have never failed to catch 3-5 big bream in about 5 minutes there. For more on bream fishing click this link.

I often fish at Molly's Backbone at night to catch catfish. We make our own catfish bait and do pretty well there on most nights. I hope you visit the best fishing spot in Catawba North Carolina. If you see a fat guy in a FedEx cap there, then it's probably me and you should say hello.

Wonderful Randy. The warning of the sandbar, a good notation. (Especially for us poor saps who can't steer a boat, LOL) ~ Prefer to fish off the shoreline myself, sounds like a great location with minimal activity! Nice! =)

It sounds like a fun time... maybe it is just an urban legend but I worked along the St. Croix and they said divers examining the bridge at Stillwater saw catfish larger than them. Maybe best not to have chicken liver grease on your clothes if swimming. :)
