Best Universal Gifts for Hipsters
Gift Certificates to...
- A tattoo palour
- Threadless.com
- Art movie theater/ traditional theater
- A hair salon
- A bookstore
- A thrift shop
Gift certificates sometimes get a bad reputation because of a theory that no thought had to go into their selection. Whereas this can be true, thoughtlessness and gift cards are not mutually inclusive. For example: You have a girlfriend who loves to mess around with her hair. Your girlfriend possibly does everything herself or has a friend help her. Whereas this is a satisfactory status quo, the gift of an actual trip to a hair salon can be golden, especially if you make it enough of a gift that she can do color. You're not only giving her the experience of what will to her be pampering, you're giving her the freedom to perhaps try something she was scared to try herself. This positive enabling is the real gift, and in general if your recipient knows you "mean" your gift, you won't have to worry about being judged as uncaring.
Best Gift for Artsy or Writer Hipsters
Moleskines
Those little notebooks are just so tempting! They are also inexpensive and particularly useful for anything from writing to sketching to music composition to freehand storyboarding. Moleskine also makes planners in their tiny little pocket-size formats and can be a great gift for that busy person who simply just refuses to carry around a
mom-planner or who enjoys little bags or no bags.
Best Gift for Fashion Conscious Hipsters
Skinny ties
If your hipster dude ever needs to dress up, he will much prefer a skinny tie over a traditional four-incher. Though he might be forced to wear a tie, they cannot force him to look corporate! No sir no how. In addition, if he learns to enjoy his new tie you might see a snappier dressed fellow on your arm on a more regular basis.
Best Gift for Book-Loving Hipsters
Anything that is even remotely related to "Where the Wild Things Are"
The cute big ole monsters have taken America by storm, spearheaded by underground lord Dave Eggers. In conjunction with the movie, he penned a novel ("The Wild Things") to flesh out the story originally set in picturebook form. The newest version of this book is actually covered in fake fur with little eyes peeping out. Hee!
Best Gift for Coffee-Loving Hipsters
Espresso machine
Hipsters often balk at paying the price for coffee shop espresso creations and yet painfully desire them still. If espresso machines were as inexpensive as coffeemakers, this would not create the catch-22 that it is. However, if your hipster is into espresso enough to desire an espresso machine, they probably care about the quality of the espresso. While spending $100 or more on an espresso machine might seem a bit pricey, think of all the $4-$5 drinks you can now enjoy with friends on your stoop, porch, roof, fire escape, or back yard. Splitting the price between several friends also makes it easier to swallow.
Best Gift for Music-Loving Hipsters
Record Player
Many hipsters love collecting vinyl records, and if you can find a great deal on an old record player your hipster friend will be in heaven. If you can find an antique-looking one that is also a decorative piece in its own right, they will probably keep it for the rest of their lives. They simply just look amazing.
Best Gifts for Alcohol-Loving Hipsters
Preferred hard liquor with glasses
Most hipsters have a hard liquor that they prefer. Whether it be whiskey, rum, vodka or whatever, a good bottle and some hip sipping glasses in the historical style of the liquor will be a well received gift. In general, look for prices in the $40-$50 range to avoid gifting something that they get on a regular basis. Just don't give the bottle to them at a party; they might not want to share with everyone but they won't want to be rude either, and expensive bottles will be imbibed very quickly, leaving only a drink or two for the intended recipient of the bottle.
Now that you've got some ideas, finish your research, plant some questions, and figure out which idea will be the perfect gift for your particular hipster friend.

I would love a record player! My birthday is in October BTW haha!
Really love that title, drew me right in. Enjoyed the suggestions, too. Don't know that I'm a hipster but I'd like the bookstore gift certificates.
Great article! :)
