The Best Gym in the Virginia Beach area is Planet Fitness located at 4324 Holland Rd, Virginia Beach VA. You can look them up at www.planetfitness.com/ClubOffers.aspx?clubid=10138. The fanciest thing about Planet Fitness is the distinctive Yellow, Purple and Black color scheme. There are no high pressure sales people, no juice bars and especially, no attitudes.

As a large woman seeking to get fit, I have found the "gym experience" in the past to be intimidating. It always seemed to me that the gym was filled with people who were already prime examples of the "healthy lifestyle", with their cute little outfits and their state-of-the-art shoes. The desks were always staffed by sales people who looked like they fell out of a fitness magazine, who wanted me to commit to a 1000 year contract at a gazillion dollars per month, and I needed to get up at 0dark30 to workout.

I will never be mistaken for a fitness model, I don't have a lot of money, I hate getting up early and my favorite gym outfit is a pair of sweats and a large tee-shirt. I had pretty much given up on gyms until a friend told me about Planet Fitness.

One of the things that qualify Planet Fitness for "Best Gym" status is the company's driving ideal. Their slogan is that Planet Fitness is a "Judgment-Free Zone". Here it is simply about getting healthy. There are no contracts. The monthly fee is about $10.00. There is a broad enough variety of equipment, in sufficient quantities, to support whatever your fitness goals may be. The staff is friendly, fit but not in an intimidating way, and available if you need them but they otherwise stay out of your way.

The facility is kept extremely clean and the equipment is well maintained. Best of all, the hours of operation are designed to fit any lifestyle. They open the doors at midnight on Monday and they stay open until 9pm on Friday. Saturday and Sunday they run from 7am-7pm. There are prime examples of the healthy lifestyle there but the "Lunk Alarm" (a siren that goes off if the free weights are dropped on the floor) keeps them in check.

They do offer tanning booth access if you sign up for the Black Card membership but there is no pool or daycare service. I like that because one of the reasons I go to the gym is to get away from my family for a little while each day and having my kids on-site with me does not let me turn off my "mommy switch".

Planet Fitness also offers franchise opportunities so if there isn't one nearby, you may consider opening one of your own. If you are looking for a clean, simple, friendly place to work out then Planet Fitness is for you.
