In order to take years off of your age, and always look fashionable, knowing what hair color works best for you at what age is essential. When you are in your 20s, 30s, 40s and beyond, you are bound to find that there is a hair color that will suit you. It's also important to always keep in mind, that no matter what your age, choosing a color that goes well with your skin tone is a great idea, especially if you want to maintain a more natural look.

When you are in your 20s it's prime time to experiment with hair color. Unless you are starting your career in a more conservative atmosphere, you can play with color changes by using semi permanent colors, washes and glosses. If you are naturally light haired you can easily go platinum blonde or even try out a fiery red. For darker hair color, if you choose to go lighter, it is recommended that you trust your hair to a professional as using bleaching or ammonia based hair aids at home can lead to disastrous effects such as frying your hair follicles or having your coveted blonde hair look more brassy than golden. For just a touch of bold, try highlights in plums, reds, or burgandies. This is the time to have fun with your locks and experiment with what color suits you and your mood.

In your 30's you'll most likely be and feel more settled into your life and career. Picking a hair color that compliments your lifestyle will be most likely what you choose to do. This is also the time when a lot of women start to notice their first few, pesky gray hairs. When looking for a semi-permanent hair color, look for one that states on the box that it will cover grays. Colors that work best in your 30's will be more neutral or you may simply choose to return to your natural color with some shine enhancing highlights and lowlights for added depth. Keep in mind, that as you get older, your hair will need more moisture to keep its elasticity and shine. After coloring your hair make sure to use a protein enhanced conditioner to keep your hair healthy and youthful. Dry, brittle hair is an instant ager and yet is easy to avoid.

For women in their 40's going a shade lighter is often recommended by hair professionals in order to hide grays better and give a more youthful, radiant appearance. However, if you have a darker complexion, maintaining a rich hair color close to your natural color works just as well. Adding some face framing layers that are highlighted will also add to a more youthful appearance and give your overall appearance a little oomph. At this point you will also want to move away from semi-permanent colors and opt for permanent hair color. Permanent hair color not only lasts longer, but is also much better for hiding larger sections of graying hair.

While many women in their 50's and beyond are happy to be called silver foxes and embrace their gray, many other women do not. What's important to keep in mind in your 50's, 60's and on up, is that you don't want a hair color that will make you look severe or unnatural. At this point in time going a softer, shade that is two or three shades lighter then your natural color is optimal. Lighter skinned women will find that using a soft blonde hair color will compliment them perfectly, while women with darker or olive skin tones will look best with a soft brown hair color with golden highlights.

No matter what your age, there is a perfect hair color for you. Hair color should always compliment the way you look, and once you are older, using the right hair color can take years off of your age. If you don't feel comfortable choosing a color on your own, find a salon you feel is a right fit for you and go in for a color consultation. Your hair can look fabulous at any age, and having fab hair will make you feel fabulous too. What's not to love about that?
