The Best Hair Sprays and How to Use Them

Amanda Furbeck
Yes, I am a product of the eighties. I love eighties music, neon green, big hair, and especially, hair spray. I have to admit, though, that as a stylist, I've come a long way since the days of mall chick hair with teased up bangs, spiral perms, and loads and loads of hair spray. However, I still find that my favorite styling product is.... good old fashioned aerosol hair spray.

Don't worry- the aerosol products of today are much more earth friendly than they were years ago. In fact, a company called Modern Organic Products claims to have its very own organic aerosol hair spray! How's that for earth friendly? Check it out at www.mopproducts.com.

Even though I love all things earth friendly, I do have a favorite hairspray. Actually, I have several. For my hair, which is fine, I like a firm hold hair spray that will hold a funky style all day. So my spray of choice is none other than Tigi's Bed Head Hard Head Hair Spray. It comes in a big silver can and is a hard hold hair spray with subtle shine. It helps to condition the hair as it holds. Sometimes I like to turn my head upside down, spray it with Hard Head, and then turn it right side up and fix any pieces that are out of place. It's quick and easy and I'm ready to go! Visit www.tigihair.com for more information on Hard Head and other great Tigi products.

In the salon, I like to use Biolage hair spray for my clients that get their hair set in rollers. I use the Biolage Gelee - a firm hold gel with heat protection - on their damp hair before I set them in rollers. After they've come out from under the dryers and I remove their rollers, I like to spray the curls with a light spray of Biolage Complete Control Hair Spray. It, too, is an aerosol hair spray made with natural products. It allows me enough workability that I can brush, tease, and shape their hair with enough hold to keep the teasing in place. I finish with another coating of the same spray to keep those lovely locks in place for a long time. Visit matrix.com for more information on Biolage products.

For fancy styles like updo's and spiral curls, I like to use Regis Designline Hold Everything Workable Shaper aersol hairspray. Before using the curling iron, I lightly spray a small section of hair, then let it cool. After it's cooled, I spray it again with a little bit more workable shaper to set the curl. When I've curled the entire head, I can then go back and separate the curls as need or pin them up wherever I'd like them to go. I top the hair off with either Designline Freeze Spray or the Paul Mitchell Freeze and Shine spritz. Visit your local Regis Salon for more information on these great styling sprays.

Good info. I have not used hair spray in a long time.
