The Best Halloween Costume Ever - A Nerd

Kelly O'Neil
In my many years of trying to attain the best Halloween costume ever, I have failed. Despite the brilliant ideas floating around in my head, I always seem to settle on the prolifically overdone cowgirl or gypsy. But I have watched from afar as others have attained the title of best Halloween costume ever. By far the best that I have seen was actually fairly simple.

One of my friends is a six foot six, incredibly muscular, incredibly popular, dancer. He dances anything from ballroom, to hip hop, to ballet, and is in great shape. He is also terrifically trendy, and always looks very fashionable. Despite his fabulous reputation, for his last Halloween costume he decided to paint the town red as a complete and total nerd.

His costume consisted of bowling shoes, argyle socks, high water trousers (rolled-up), red suspenders, a red plaid button up shirt with the pocket overflowing with pencils and a calculator, a pocket protector, a Star Trek watch, thick black glasses taped together at the nose, and large pink zits made out of makeup. He was nerdy to the last detail. He also brought along two ladies (his dance partners) decked out as totally nerdy girlfriends to complete his ensemble.

The best part of his costume was that he totally played the part. He calculated things (such as the per ounce cost of the drink he ordered), slumped around, and even snorted a few times. On the dance floor, he traded his usual hip hop moves for a awkward flailing bunch of moves that were definitely scary enough for Halloween. He even had a few bartenders wondering whether it was a costume or not.

What really worked about this costume was that it was so unlikely. The fact that he characterized nerd right down to a tee was such a great contrast to his usual hip self. The costume was also a hit, because he thought it through from zit to nerd girlfriends.

This costume shows that the best costume does not have to be the most unique, but it does have to be well done. From the idea to the details, to pulling it off, you really have to be whatever character you choose to portray. Do not last minute if you really want to make an impression. And don't let your nerdy guard down. You need to be quoting pie all night.

So think simple, get nerdy, and get out on the town. I hope you have a safe and happy Halloween!
