Best Halloween costume shops in the Twin Cities:

Twin Cities Magic and Costume

This is #1 on my list for Best Halloween Costume Shops in the Twin Cities for a reason! This place is HUGE, and it is open all year round. Besides that, they have an impressive collection of costumes for rent or sale, they have a great makeup collection (which is rare these days), have a good supply of quality wigs (even for bigger heads like mine). Best of all, they don't jack up their prices during Halloween.

Now remember folks, this place is not just Twin Cities Costume, it is Twin Cities MAGIC and Costume! For you budding magicians out there, this is your supply shop. They have small tricks like card tricks and coin tricks, medium tricks like the good old Rabbit in the hat, and finally - if you are 'in the know', they have larger tricks for sale in the back. Have you ever wanted to saw your spouse in half? Well, I know I have! And with Twin Cities Magic and Costume, you can!

They have props, canes, and any small costume pieces you can imagine. Their wall of hats is impressive in its enormity, and they have more sticks than you can shake a stick at. The one problem I have with Twin Cities Magic and Costume is that they have a great variety of both very high quality stuff, and they also have a lot of cheap plastic stuff. Unfortunately, for the most part, it is all mixed together and you need either a discerning eye or knowing what is of high quality or not. Because their prices are reasonable, sometimes it is difficult to distinguish the trash from the treasure.

Ragstock / Savers

Now this isn't your typical costume shop, but you can find an endless supply of costumes, props, some makeup, and anything else you can imagine. Now Ragstock is a vintage store, and Savers is a 2nd hand store, but that doesn't mean that you can't get just as many great ideas for costumes there. You can find wigs sometimes if you are lucky, and during the Halloween season, both of these shops have some pretty inexpensive facepaint-style makeup. If you are a big guy like I am, finding something in my size is difficult, but the hunt is half of the fun! When you can find things that will make great costumes, though, you can find them for 1/10th of the cost of 'real' costume shops. If you are looking for a specific costume like a Homeless Person or a Zombie, or for great makeup tips, take a look at the links. My main warning at shops like these, is to wash everything before you wear it - even at Ragstock's.

Eagle Magic & Joke Store

This is one of those well kept secrets on the outskirts of Downtown Minneapolis, on 4th Ave. South and 8th St. South. And sure, it blends well into the buildings around it, but if you walk down the street, you can find it eventually. This is not a large shop, nor does it have an amazing selection, but they are faithful to their customers, and love to work with schools on Theatre productions. They do rentals, sales, they have a pretty good makeup collection (and are willing to order individual pieces). They, like Twin Cities Magic and Costume are around all through the year, but they do most of their business and are open the most during Halloween. If you are a regular at shops like these, this is highly recommended.
