The Best Halloween Haunted Houses in West Virginia

The Best Halloween Haunted Houses in West VirginiaThe Appalachian Mountain Range is a breeding ground for scary Halloween legends. West Virginia is located in the heart of these mountains, and mountain folklore about ghosts, goblins, Bigfoot, Mothman, and strange occurrences ripple through the land as Halloween approaches.

Then there are the haunted houses of October in West Viginia. All across the state of West Virginia, certain buildings become gathering points for poltergeists, spirits, witches, and warlocks that have only one goal: To scare the heeby-jeebies out of you. In West Virginia, there are several haunted houses throughout the state that open their doors to the public during the month of October.

The Asylum - Ward 24
The world famous and historic mental hospital in Weston, West Virginia, The Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum plays host to an annual haunted house that costs $15 for admission. The lunatic asylum opens up its infamous Ward-24 where "the most volatile cases are kept." Be warned that this haunted house is not for the faint of heart, and anyone under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult, as you never know what will happen inside the confines of Ward-24. The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum has recently been featured on the Travel Channel as well as a couple of ghost hunter shows, so you may just see a real ghost or two who may be interested in catching the theatrics. The Asylum - Ward 24 will be open Wednesday through Sunday from dark until 10 PM.

Doctor Dekay's House of Screams
Another haunted attraction takes place on Friday and Saturday Nights, the last three weekends of October in Ona, West Virginia. Doctor Dekay's House of Screams is geared to older audiences, and will give you a good scare. The cost for the House of Screams is $10 per person, and group rates are available if you call ahead. There are four haunted attractions this year that include a hayride, a trip through an evil cemetery, a haunted house, and trip through the forest on a haunted trail of horror. The haunted trail should be a real treat in the dark Appalachian Mountain woods as Halloween approaches.

Foggy Bottom Festival of Fright
A little further north of the Lunatic Asylum, in Wheeling, you can check out the Foggy Bottom Festival of Fright. The Festival of Fright takes place on an old farmstead and uses several outbuildings located on the property. This attraction is oriented towards the family, so it will not be quite as scary as the Asylum, and the House of Screams. Foggy Bottom is co-located with a family fun center, so if you are in the mood for soft-serve ice cream or a round of mini-golf then it is a short walk from the haunted grounds.
