The Best Halloween Masks This Year

And the Easiest Way to Switch Costumes!

D.K. Bernhard
What are the best Halloween Masks for this year, how should I accessorize them, and what makes a great mask? All of these questions and more will be answered!

Halloween is coming, you don't know how to do makeup (even though you've read one of my Halloween Makeup Tips articles), and you just want to get something simple so you can go to the best parties? Perhaps you have a few different parties to go to, and don't want to be caught 'dead' wearing the same costume twice? Well, I will show you some of the best masks to wear, and costume pieces to go with them...

These masks were chosen because they work well together - you can reuse some of your main costume pieces in a different costume, or they are things you already own! Now how cool is that?

First of all, what makes a good Halloween mask is that it is recognizable, you can see well, and you can breathe. For masks that have eye holes, I would suggest painting around your eyes and mouth with a dark or light face paint, so your skin tone doesn't totally clash with your mask, ruining the effect.

Barrack Obama

Well, talk about recognizable? The President of the United States has always been a popular choice for a Halloween mask. Especially because accessorising is usually quite easy. A nice, black suit, a red (or patriotic) tie, and black dress shoes - and dark socks. Depending on the mask (and outfit you wear with it), you can either show your admiration of the U.S. President, or your disdain for him. This will lead me on to my next mask choice...

Jigsaw - SAW I, II, II, etc.

With the same black suit, exchanging a red bow tie for your standard red or patriotic necktie, you can switch your costume very easily. The fame of the SAW movies, combined with the horror that Jigsaw represents. Tell me, "Do you want to live, or die?" This mask, and a quick tie change, can take you to two different parties in one night with completely different Halloween Costumes!

Tie Fighter - Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, etc.

Though not a major motion picture this year, Star Wars will always bee a part of Americana, and of Halloween Masks. Go to any Army surplus store, purchase some good, black boots, and a black Jumpsuit or BDUs. Buy some black leather gloves in a gauntlet style, and you have yourself a costume. If you want to get more fancy, you can buy a 'utility belt' from the Army surplus store, to finish out the outfit.

Michael Meyers - Halloween

With Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween, the traditional Michael Meyers mask has come back into vogue. Take your jumpsuit from the Tie Fighter costume, keep the boots, and replace your utility belt with a butcher knife (PLEASE do NOT go out with a REAL butcher knife!), take off the gloves, and you have another very quick, very effective costume change! I would almost suggest Black BDUs in the interest of making this costume even more usable for your third Halloween party of the year...

The Scientist/Rex - GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Another quick costume change! Drop the butcher knife, pick up a large syringe (no needle, please) with some green food coloring and oil, and you have yet another almost instantaneous costume change. The greatest thing about Halloween Masks is the complete versatility that some of them give you! I've detailed 5 different costumes, with only two major costume changes all for the cost of the mask.

Happy Halloween, and remember! No REAL butcher knives or syringes, people!
