The Best Holiday Road Trip Movies for the Kids

Robert Cole
Holiday road trips can be a great way to bring the family together- or they can be a complete disaster. One of the best ways to keep things happy is to keep the kids happy and bringing along some good DVDs for them to watch during the drive is a perfect way to do that. Good holiday DVDs will put the whole family in the seasonal spirit and keep the drive much more stress-free.

1. The Nightmare Before Christmas.
This film by Tim Burton is a classic holiday movie with a twist that the kids will really enjoy. The off-beat comedy, animation and songs are sure to make the drive much more enjoyable. There is not really an age-specific group that will enjoy this movie more than another, so it's pretty well rounded to entertain just about any young person.

2. How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Both the Dr. Seuss classic animated film and the newer version with Jim Carrey, The Grinch, are great choices for kids holiday movies. Kids between the ages of 2 and 12 are sure to have fun watching this green staple character try to ruin a wonderful Christmas celebration before the holiday spirit ultimately takes him over.

3. A Charlie Brown Christmas.
Charlie Brown is a character that stays in the hearts of everyone. Even adults can enjoy remembering Lucy, Snoopy, Charlie and all the other Peanuts characters interact and celebrate Christmas.

4. Home Alone.
Although the sequels are just as fun, Home Alone really hit a chord for kids when it was first released in 1990. The kids will love the young main character as he ensnares two thieves in a net of traps and silly situations.

5. Winnie the Pooh: A Very Merry Pooh Bear.
A.A. Milnes was really onto something when he began writing about Winnie the Pooh and the Hundred Acre Wood. The Disney renditions of his books and stories make for great holiday DVDs for the kids to watch in the car. Although the movie may respond the best in kids under the age of 10, just about anyone young and old can enjoy this cartoon classic.

6. The Santa Clause.
Tim Allen puts on a great performance in the movie and it set the stage for many later imitations. This story is perfect for kids under 13 with an engrossing plot that is easy to follow and the funnies are sure to cause some laughs.

7. Frosty the Snowman.
Almost every American probably remembers this cartoon at one point or another, broad-casted every year on major television networks across the nation. It makes for a great movie to kick off the holidays and a better back seat movie during the drive. Kids under 10 will enjoy this DVD while the adults in the front seat will smile as they hear the memorable dialogue play out.

8. Elf.
This recent film with Will Ferrel is as funny as it is ridiculous. The outrageous story line of a giant Elf will keep the kids happy on the way to your holiday destination. It's perfect for children under the age of 12, but older kids won't mind this Christmas comedy during the drive to grandmas.

9. A Christmas Story.
This movie has an interesting plot that is perfect for the older kids, but the younger ones can have a good time watching it too. A Christmas Story really sums up the average American Christmas experience and provides a lot more than your average holiday-themed movie. Because of certain scenes, this movie may not be appropriate for kids under the age of 10.

10. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
Possibly no other classic Christmas cartoon has managed to become so ingrained in American holiday culture. The story, along with the moral, is perfect kids under 12. Rudolph will help bring out the holiday spirit in any child and convey to kids the meaning of Christmas.

These films will prove to be indispensable during your holiday road trip. Your kids' attention will be grabbed while they learn more about Christmas and the spirit of giving. Check out some of these titles at your local retailer and hit the road with the perfect lineup of Christmas DVDs.
