The Best Hostels in Queenstown, New Zealand

John Leonard
Queenstown, New Zealand is a backpacker's paradise. Whether you're in the mood for ecotourism or adventure sports, this small tourist haven on New Zealand's south island is a great destination for lovers of the outdoors. Despite its small size, Queenstown also hosts an array of restaurants, pubs, and clubs popular with the young backpacker crowd. Have a fun and budget friendly stay by selecting one of the lakeside town's best backpacker hostels.

Nomad's Queenstown

Nomad's Queenstown boasts a convenient location just a few minutes' walk to city center and mere blocks away from the waterfront of Lake Wakatipu. The recently-opened hostel features a wide variety of room styles. If you don't mind brushing elbows with other backpackers, stay in a six, eight, 10, or 12 bed dorm, or if you'd rather have a bit more privacy you can share a smaller twin, double, triple, or four-bed room with a group of friends.

Like any good backpacker hostel, Nomad's has a full kitchen and dining area so you can budget wisely and self cater. Its entertainment options include a large common room with cable television, DVDs and pool tables, as well as an events organizer to take you out on the town and enjoy Queenstown's nightlife.

Bumbles Backpackers

Bumbles Backpackers offers a luxury backpacker experience, with modern furniture, nice décor, and a scenic location directly across the street from the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Rather than offer the standard backpacker dormitories, Bumbles has shared rooms for five to 6 people as well as twin rooms, double rooms, and even outdoor tent sites for the budget-conscious traveler.

Cook in the modern kitchen or head outdoors for a lakeside barbecue. In addition to having its own barbecue grills on site, Bumbles' location means you can walk right across the street to use the public grills right along the lake.

Hippo Lodge

Hippo Lodge is a smaller backpackers hostel with lower prices and lots of charm. The lodge sits up above the city center on a hillside street overlooking the lake and mountains, but you'll only have a 5 to 10 minute walk down to the shops and pubs. Accommodations range from basic tent sites to single/double rooms to three, four, or five bed dormitories.

Hippo Lodge offers free luggage storage, a free tour desk to book local activities and onward accommodation, a fully stocked kitchen and barbecue area. If you're looking for a quieter place to stay, Hippo Lodge should be your first choice.
