The Best Ice Cream in Kansas City
Murray's Ice Creams and Cookies in Westport is the Best Place to Go for Something Sweet
Murray's is best known for its ice cream but also offers a delicious selection of cookies, brownies, coffee drinks, smoothies, shakes, and Italian sodas. The menu for ice cream options alone takes up most of the back wall, offering everything from shakes made with your favorite ice cream to triple layered sundaes. All of the ice cream here is made in the store from natural ingredients, and you can even watch them make the waffle cones if you are lucky! The flavor selection is what makes this place unique more than anything else. The selection always varies; the flavors are homemade one at a time, so when one runs out they make another to fill that spot. Green Tea, chocolate, and vanilla, however, are pretty standard flavors for them. Their pie flavored ice creams are the best, mixing homemade pies such as blackberry, apple, cheesecake, birthday cake, pumpkin, and many others into their ice creams. Murray's is known for using unusual natural ingredients in the ice cream such as green tea, ginger, violet, and lemongrass. But, for the more sweet-toothed, there are always delicious chocolate variations as well as a wide range of topping options. Some toppings you can pick from are chocolate syrup, honey, caramel, butterscotch, and blue marshmallow.
Children and adults both can find something to love here, whether you are looking for sweets for an event (they will make you their cookies and ice creams in large quantities) or just stopping in between shops. Tons of locals, including myself, oftentimes drive down to Westport simply to go to Murray's. Also, if there is a flavor you want but they don't have it when you go, you can give them your name and ask them to call you when they make that kind! I have tried to get them to deliver across the country, but unfortunately they can't do that (understandably). It is right in the middle of several shops or restaurants, so it's a great place to stop after dinner or on a date. There is very limited seating inside the shop, a few tables and the coffee bar. But, outside there are plenty of benches in front of the shop and along the sidewalk where you can sit and enjoy your treat.
